you have not selected any mid outputs.
I just installed music creator 2002 on my mom's Toshiba satellite laptop. It asks me to pick a mid output. I click choose now and pick the only output available, Microsoft mid mapper and click OK. It says you have not selected any mid outputs, again. What should I do?

Dude....? That's some old software.... Basically that message means it did NOT see any midi input devices connected to it. Unless you have some sort of MIDI device, such as an interface with midi or a keyboard with a USB connection it does not see any midi devices and is telling you that. Click through it and you can still work with audio input AND you can still insert the midi tracks into the project and add midi data by mousing it in OR by importing a midi track from another source. MC 2002 is before my time here (with cakewalk) but a friend of mine has it on his laptop. (Wait... you said OUTPUTS.... duhhhhhh!) IDK... I have always used a decent midi interface for in and out.... Since you only have one output for midi..... what happens when you attempt to play some midi?

You still don't have an output. The MIDI mapper is not a valid selection. It's for mapping to hardware MIDI devices. Without those, it has nowhere to go. While the message you are seeing appears alarming, it is not terribly relevant. Just click "Do not show this at startup". Older Cakewalk products generally default to WDM driver mode when first started up. Using WDM, you may not have the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth available, but you can switch to MME, and the wavetable synth should be a valid option. This would likely be the only option for a MIDI output that you could use. You may have a few soft synths available, such as Edirol VSC (considering the vintage of the software). If you downloaded MC2002 from the internet, it is a hacked copy. It may not be complete, and there is a fair chance that it brought some friends with it. If the laptop is fairly new, and running Vista or Windows 7, I would strongly suggest downloading the current version, Music Creator 6. It is modestly priced, and would probably be a much more satisfying experience.

I don't see any of that. I can't hear anything when I add notes to a mid track using the staff. I already know I have to pick an instrument and I did.

Did you Insert a software synthesizer? Did you set the MIDI track's outputs to the soft synth? Click the Insert button at the top and tell us what, if any, soft synths are available. Or, did you change the Driver Mode to MME and select the Microsoft GS Wavetable synth as the MIDI output and set the MIDI tracks's outputs to the Wavetable synth? You must be in MME driver mode to use the MS GS Wavetable synth. And remember, software as old as this probably won't work if the OS is Vista or Win 7. What is your Operating System?

Well, actually you didn't. The MIDI mapper is not an instrument. It is not capable of producing sound. It just directs the MIDI data to an instrument somewhere else. It is sending your MIDI into space, because it has nothing to point to. Does that make sense? I haven't worked with anything that old, but the setup should still be similar. Click Options>Audio. Change the Driver Mode from WDM to MME. Click OK. You will need to restart the program for the change to take effect. When the program restarts, it will run a test on the sound card. Once that is complete, you should see the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth in your MIDI Outputs. Select that. Make sure your MIDI track output shows the Wavetable synth. At this point, you should have sound.

The advice Robert suggested, to buy the newer version of MC6 is the best thing... If you just bought MC2002 ...like he said it's probably not a legal version. At best it's just an old copy someone had laying around and sold it cheap on Ebay, at worst, it's a cracked version and could very well have viruses in it as well. It's also 12 years old and much has changed for the better with the newer MC6. The new MC6 is sweet...lots of instruments and they are sampled sounds, not synths.... so they sound so much better.
