"I'd like to emphasize that the point I would prefer to make is that having the right player and instrument for the song" Yikes, I've got the Collings model pictured (actually the bound model), but the "player", pitifully, is me . But yes please, do elaborate on mic placement... Thanks, T

I have recorded the mandolin a few times too and did something very similar to Mike in that picture in his post. (Although without the baffle) About 12 inches are so in front with a quality microphone and pretty well directly in front of it. In Canberra (where I used to live) there is an amazing mandolin player (Tony Hunter) who is an fantastic jazz player (as well as bluegrass and folk music of course) and he can just rip over jazz tunes on this instrument which is not easy to do I would imagine. ie he can do all the chromatic stuff rather than a more inside approach harmonically which often occurs in mado playing. It is just such a breath of fresh air to hear it played this way. And when it is played so well as I have always said, the microphone and positioning and even the mandolin itself don't have much bearing in the final outcome, the playing just speaks volumes.

"I believe the synopsis was put the mics up and play for a few days until it just sounds right. " +1 to that. I can't offer advice on mic types. I have a limited selection. As for positioning, a boom stand is indispensable. The sweet will be unique to any given acoustic instrument, and can move, depending on how you are playing. Place your mic(s) based on the general advice above, and listen through headphone loud enough that you can't hear the instrument directly. Move around. Side to side, up and down, forward and back. You will find spots where the sound just "pops". You'll know it when you hear it. It's not unreasonable to spend a day or two finding that spot before you ever hit the record button.

+1 to Roberts advice..... I do like to hit the record however right form the beginning and play it back...delete it and try again. Sometimes a few inches will make all the difference in the world. I have started to record acoustic things with the mic overhead and close to my ears so it "hears" about the same thing as I do. This has worked well..... but I really like the close in .... 12 inches or so..... sound as well. It is nice and fat.
