Your Hands...thanks everyone, I'm taking this one down now.

Fortunately it's only her vox, & his keys and guitar.  What do I need to fix this time?

Trim the noise at the beginning before the vocals starts and use a gate when tracking vocals set so the mic doesnt pick up that noise. Bring the piano way down, and reduce the lower frequencies with eq. Get the guitar player to track using a metronome. He speeds up and slows down. That'll be a good start

Guitar players suck, we all do. We Either do things too fast? Or if we try to slow it down, it may never happen. WAIT!? Are we talking about the same thing?

I need to fix my situation (REALLY) where I can only listen on notebook speakers? It sucks... Because I don't get the full effect, and I can't really comment on the mix :-( The song is pretty though? But... Well? You know about me and production? :-) I would bleed things in, and make it BIG! Because I believe size matters? WAIT!? Are we talking about the same thing?

Janet, this all sounds pretty good.
Nice job on the recording of the tracks.  Randy is right about the guitar. Acoustics tend to have a bigger low end then our ears hear. I have to cut a ton of lows (slight exaggeration)  on my acoustics to get them sounding right.

Using a click or drum track to keep the timing right and constant is a really good idea unless it is just one instrument and one singer. The variations between two instruments though small, will become apparent to the listener. You can always mute the click after the fact, but keep it steady in the tracking stage. Secret #354... play the piano part to the click so it's steady, then mute the click.... the piano part is rock solid, now track the guitars and vocals by using the piano as the click... they'll never know they are playing to a "click track" .... for the purists who like to say..."I don't need no stinkin click track. "..................   but the piano didn't come in at the beginning did it?  Again..... play a "throw away" part in the beginning.

At 1:03 -  the vox are muddied ... not like the crisp sound they have at the very beginning. They stay that way..... It could be ( I'm listening on computer speakers) that the guitar is running interference in the same freqs....and the 3 things are not separated in the stereo field.

This is a pretty song.....and once the nits are worked out will be superb. I like the fact that you did not try to clutter it with other instruments. That makes it imperative that the 2 instruments in it are eq'd right and they set in the right place in respect to the vox.

OK, just uploaded a new version.  I moved the last half of the guitar track so it's more in line.  He had edited something in the middle and it must have shifted the rest of the track.  The piano track was driving me nuts so I didn't even hear the guitar track being off.  :(  Now I also hear the noise on his guitar track.  That's probably because his guitar has a short and wouldn't even record at first.  At any rate, I have no idea how to get that out, so unless they want to re-record, I guess they'll have to live with it. I brought the piano down and lowered the lower freq even lower than I already had.

Robby, when are you going to quit complaining and get some decent speakers?

Herb, I didn't have anything to do with the recording except to realize his guitar was the culprit when it wouldn't record.  (so thankful I had my son's guitar close by so we could check it out!)  It was his choice not to record to a click track, so it is what it is. (I use a click track all the time, so I know what you mean.)  I'll see if I can separate the instruments a bit more...and change the frequency of the guitar?  Is that what you mean?  Thanks again. Really appreciate the ears.

Sounds really good to me, Janet. Very nice mix. I thought the guitar is fine... not really too many timing issues, not crazy about the miking of the guitar. It sounds too electric for this type of tune. Other than that, I enjoyed this a lot. Nice vocals.

i've listened to this a few times in the past days. never commented.
wasn't there a piano? Maybe everyone scared the piano out of it.
I like it the way it is.

Janet, Missed the first rendition but this one sounds really nice.. Few timing issues with the guitar but hardly noticeable. Vocals are good. I wouldn't change a thing. You know you have a good song when it stands alone on a vocal and acoustic guitar.... I have none of those such songs;)

I missed the first mix as well.

I like it just the way it is though. I hear hints here and there of the piano. Maybe pan the guitar 50% to the right and the piano 50% to the left and balance it from there leaving that very lovely voice in the center. You can adjust the pan till you think it's right. Trust your ears. Your doing well!

    Great stuff!

the piano right now, to me, sounds more like a synth (almost a rhodes, but not quite "tiney" enough) - what did you use for the piano?
    nice vox and guitar.
there's something going on at 2:34.  sounds like possible digital distortion, not sure if it's just on the guitar or if it's the summed bus.

Thanks, James. I've heard you guys talk about miking a guitar, but I only have one mic and really don't know how to do it well, so we just plugged his in.

    Thanks BDude!

Thanks Tim.  Yeah, the piano got scared away.  I might have taken it down a bit too much, but she's happy with it this way and says that was his intent, so I guess I'll leave it.

Thanks Mark.  IMO, she doesn't even need a guitar.  :)

Thanks Guitarpima.  I think they like the piano the way it is, so I'll probably leave it.  But that's a great idea.

    Thanks Scott.  See above.

Thanks Reece.  Just the normal Ivory setting but it sounds a little weird to me too.  I'll check out 2:34.  Thanks!

I think I'll take this one down now.  Time to move on to other things.  Thanks again everyone!

I'm not frustrated, Tim.  But they're not my songs so I never planned to leave them on my SC page.  She's ready to burn a CD for her mom for Christmas, so there's no reason for me to keep sweating over it.  But thanks.  :)

Robby, I wouldn't be offended if you'd delete that.
