Video for a band I mixed (also formerly featured in October Sound On Sound)

I mixed this tune: "Four Points"  for the band "Young Griffo"  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eAQn4_hswU&feature=player_embedded
I'm quite happy with the way it turned out - this is my favorite tune off the EP, actually.

Their EP "Tiny Islands" includes 5 songs mixed mixed by myself, & the other track on the EP, "Facade" was mixed by Mike Senior of "Sound On Sound" magazine's "Mix Rescue" series & Cambridge Music Technology.  The Sound On Sound Mix Rescue article on "Facade" was featured in the October issue of Sound On Sound, which you can read here: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/oct11/articles/mix-rescue-1011.htm

Young Griffo's EP "Tiny Islands" is available for whatever you want to spend as a download on Bandcamp here: http://younggriffo.bandcamp.com/

    Great tunage!

I think the bass is a little to loud. Other than that, Very well done!

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

Thanks - I didn't write or play on it, just mixed it...

I've actally never had anyone comment on the bass being too loud on this mix, so your comment interests me.

I'll admit, the bass is prominent, but I don't feel it's overly loud. I felt the song was really all about the bassline, so it deserved to be given space.  I referenced the mix heavily with other commercial tracks in a similar vain & it seemed to compare favourably... However the mix has since been mastered, & the YouTube presentation may affect the balances a bit, but those things are kinda out of my control at the moment.

    Thanks for listening & commenting!

Beautiful mix you did there, lovely overall sound, perfect clarity and seperation between instruments.  Great song as well, I can listen to that stuff all day.

Shame the vid editing wasn't up to the same standard.  (I know that wasn't you)

Thanks Karyn - Glad you liked it... Yeah, the band won the video time in a competition - the footage is of their EP launch, but I think the editing was limited by the fact that they had only one camera taking footage on the night.

+1. The tone on the bass is killer, but about 1-2db too loud IMO.

Ok, another vote for bass too loud - maybe I should start a poll  (although there's nothing I can do about it now, song is mastered, EP is out).

Glad you liked the bass tone - I actually worked quite hard to get it  - being quite pleased with it at the time, I did a little tutorial over at Recording Review.com if you're at all interested:

I also enjoyed the song and the mix.  I thought the bass volume appropriate for the style.  Good job on the drums and dynamics of the tune.

Nice little tune, I can understand the Bass point but it got good tone and to me is part of the backbone of the tune

+1 Wookiee.  Bass sounded good in my cans.  Distorted guitar sound seems like it was distorted technically like the original signal was recorded in the red.  Love the bass, clean guitar and vocals sounds a lot.

    Hey Andrew,
GREAT tune.  I love a great bass line so on my end the mix sounds really good.  I also listen to "FACADE" I like Mike's mix but I'm DIGIN your sound.

Hey Rimshot - thanks for listening & commenting... The distorted guitar wasn't clipped digitally at all - it was actually a fuzz pedal (I'm not sure which one, as I didn't record it), but it was very distorted.  TBH, I wasn't at all keen on the tone myself, but I had no option as there was no DI tracks or other versions.  In the end I decided to highlight the "ugliness" of the tone, because I feel it really parallels the song's narrative... now, it's kinda grown on me.
