I like this one, Herb! What guitar/signal chain did you use for this one?I did a version that sounded like James Bond surfer music. LOL

Oh man...the Herb monster kicking up some gain?! Absolutely loved this brother! Really nice job here bro. Subjective comment or two if I may? Drums sound a little high endy to you by chance? Cyms and snare seem a little bright to me on this end. Another thing I'm hearing is like a HAAS effect or something on the drums making them so big it's kinda stopping your pans from coming through...like you know that "full left/right" thing going on? I hear all the drums coming from both sides simultaneously...like a stereo effect. If that's what you wanted...that's cool...it just seems like...hmmm how can I explain it...let me try to draw it up. Here's what your soundstage sounds like to me.

    Left((((((((((((((((((DRUMS)))))))))))))))))))<<<MUSIC>>>((((((((((((((((DRUMS)))))))))))))))))Right

Like your drums are taking up the entire stereo field outside of your music....music in the middle. Make sense at all and can you hear it? Of course there are no rules....but normally (unless again, this was by choice) it's the other way around. We have our drums pretty much in the middle of the field with pans etc, and our music bed surrounds them. The way you have it now, in my opinion, due to the stereo spread, it makes the drums have less of an impact and sort of makes the kit sound a bit separated or disconnected from the mix to me. It's not a bad thing, honest...everything is completely audible...it just sounds a bit strange to me with the kit spread out like that.

Guitars....incredible tone brother. I've not heard too many gainy type tones from you...but whatever you used on this...that's a definite keeper. Great playing too...nice warm tone, melodic phrasing, great harmonies...I really enjoyed seeing you go for a more rocked up vibe. You do all the other stuff killer too which I always look forward to in your tunes, but this was a nice change being a bit more rocked up. The bass guitar sat in there really well...nice bottom holding everything together. Really good job on this Herb, thanks for sharing brother. Hopefully my comments don't upset you...the mix is fine really, just some little things that I noticed on this end that I felt you might want to know. :)

Yeah, the guitar, keys, and bass are superb. Gotta admit, the hi-hat and snare are top-endy to the point of distraction.
Reign those in, and you have a killer track here.

Scotty:  my signal chain is the same as always..... SG into the POD.  i just used the rectum-fryer setting to play through.  The last lick was a tribute to you... I have three guitars in harmony.

Danny: drums seem to be my Achilles heel.... I'm glad you liked the gain cranked up.  I appreciate the comments.

Love this Herb,  Little different style for you on this one.
I like it.    I'm not one to critic (not qualified) .  But I agree with
Danny.   Something not sitting right with me on the cymbals.
It is a very loud mix, maybe alittle to much compression that brought
out to much highend in the drums.   I don't know,  Just my observation.

    Other than that sounds great..............:)

Very nice Herb. This is a good song to rock out on.

I'm not even gonna ask about the 'rectum fryer' setting. I'm just going to assume it's a POD thing. :)

Yeah it is..... strictly a POD thing. OK  so the POD does have a model called Rectified.... I'm guessing form the dual rectifier amps that scream....  Imagine standing on a stage playing..... you are facing the audience..... your posterior side is facing the amps.... FIRE is shooting out of the speakers from the sweet dual rectified sound....a bit of an exaggeration but... got the picture?

    Hi Herb,

Very cool version of this tune.  Your guitar tone/playing are excellent, as always.

Mix sounds fine on my cheap laptop.

Nice take on this tune Herb.

Got to agree about the drums.

What are you using.  If you where using Superior drummer it sounds to me like the individual kit parts have been panned one way but the overheads are paned in the opposite way and bleed is active.  This could of course be total furry ear syndrome.

This is great... but I don't think of Greensleeves as a Christmas tune... it's just some crap dreamt up by Henry VIII isn't it?

However, this arrangement is fab - nice and clear, I like the solo at around the 2 minute mark.

My wife was listening and said that the arrangement reminded of House of the Rising Sun, don't know how you want to take that?

    Cheers,
    Terry.

    Very well done!

The drums in this IIRC are generated by Real Band.  I didn't do anything different to them to give them more stereo separation or anything.....

I went looking for the original Sonar file on this tune to dig in a bit..... but in the time I had.... I could not find it. I know it's there, it's probably got a different name than Greensleeves....

Wookie, Terry, Mark & guitarpima..... thanks for listening....

Edit: I think one of my projects for the new year, or maybe this years end is to re-organize my files into a better system and place them all in the storage and back up drives like they're supposed to be.....I got lazy this year and they are scattered all over the place.

I like it Herb, nice rockier side to you.

I am assuming that you did use the Pod 2 then?  I may have to dig mine out again. Lately, I have started using Pod Farm 2 quite often through out my songs.  I still fall back to mic'ing a tube amp for most of the leads, but sometimes not.  The abilty to change amps and turn knobs later on, when refining a mix has been really useful for this song writer.  The funny thing has been, I have gotten more "great tone" comments while using PF2 than I ever used to just from mic'ed amps.  I still hear difference myself, and probably mostly, feel the difference of no speakers, but overall, it has made my writing and recording process much simpler.

I did this as a heavy piece on my Christmas CD... buy you "out-heavied" me.  Nicely done.  This is such a great rock-type tune anyway.  Very cool.

I might roll-off the high end on the 2:18.  Do you have the volume knob on your guitar rolled back a tad?  That often helps with high gain.

Ihanson... thanks.... I think for next year.... I am going to attempt something along the lines of a TSO Christmas tune..... big gnarley synths.... guitars with flames coming out the speakers, huge drums.....

or... maybe I do some more acoustic stuff.... it's easier.
