This years' upgrading...
So had some money to burn off within this financial year so I just purchaced a new motherboard and processor for my DAW. The nerds who usually helps me with these things recomended to get i7-2600k processor and a Asus Sabretooth p67 motherboard which were sold as a bundle over here. I got a very decent price and could get some kick ass cooling stuff as well. So far so good. But, reading up on these things I realize that a processor is not what it used to be. Hyperthreading? Multithreading? On/off with this and that if you want. I'm not going to overclock!!!! But is there some good advice for using this hardware with Sonar? My nerd friend give me a lot of technical info which I don't understand at all so I thought I'd ask here. I'm only thinking about the hardware part, Win7 I know how to use So, any tips you want to share? I appreciate any pointers to make the most of this Cheers!

I have an i7 2600 processor in my custom-built PC (by a specialist audio PC firm) and it came overclocked to 3400 which I understand is quite safe and normal. Oh, and use 64 bit all the way.

ProjectM Nothing? Just plug and play? This may not be viable for you, but I used Jim Roseberry to consult on setting up my i7 2600K with an Asus board. We talked on the phone and he walked me through the setup. Best consulting fee I ever paid.

I think the 2600k is clocked to 3.4 Ghz. Can't wait to get the extra juice! Do you know if there are any special settings done to it? Or to Sonar in in regards to the nber Of cores etc?

Sorry Marius, I don't overclock. But what limited knowledge I have, it's all done at the mobo bios level.

Cheers Bapu! Yeah, I thought of Jim but calling would cost millions from over here so I thought I'd get the general public to chime in. Usually, that's pretty good too I have some nerds but they don't understand or use Sonar. But they'll help me gel it all together safely. I realize that some things are done in BIOS but not sure exactly what to look for. I remember reading alot back and forth about hyperthreading, or whatever it's called, for example.

Skyline_UK You might want to ask these questions on the PC section of the Sound On Sound forums. You often get responses there from Pete at Scan who make excellent audio PCs (I have one), as well as from the top-flight technical SOS guy Martin Walker. http://www.soundonsound.com/forum/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=PCMus Ah, I didn't think of that. Excellent advice and I'll look into that. Never been to the SOS forums before. I'll have a search through. Thanks for that

Is that without any tweaks in the BIOS? I don't even know if it's neccesary but if it is, I sure could use some info. Have googled a bit but there seem to be more answers to this than there are DAW's out there. My current DAW is self buildt and I've had my share of fun with it before it got stable. Learned a lot in the process. But my current Q9550 was easy to install and no other options than to just let it do it's job. All this four core acting like eight business is confusing me

I haven't upgraded anything other than software for 3 years and since this is a tool I make money off I find that it's easy to justify the outlay now. Besides, I needed to spend some dough to get som extra tax benefits next year. It's quirky, but it works. But hang in there! Save a dollar each day or whenever you have it and you can upgrade your DAW sooner than you think Christmas is around the corner, so if you play your cards right it'll be under the tree meebe?

I've got access to some nerds myself and they're great. I got myself an i7 with shedloads of ram and i can't see myself making any music that will ever push it. Maybe some new VSTs need to be invented that will require one to update his/her computer.

I love nerds! They do the thinking for me I started to push 100++++ tracks on a current project and I am too impatient to freeze and unfreeze all the time so I thought an upgrade was due. Forgot to mention, I'll be having 16Gb or RAM with this upgrade as well. Really fast RAM, it'll be cool. Don't think I'll ever use it but the CPU will be busy at least. Did you do any tweaks to your i7? What kind of i7 is it?

I have the components you are buying. works pretty good. I'm sure you know the drill with the bios. Just mainly common sense about what to turn off etc. I think the only mis-step would be with what drivers to install from the asus CD (or website). I just checked as best as I could what was available on line for the components and took it from there. I would say also, that any win7 tweaks or adjustments are probably more important than worrying about the mobo and chip. Since you've got that together, Just install and make some music:) I had a few dialogues here about the whole process. I tried to find them for you with the search function but of course that is a joke, sorry. This was like around August/Sept.

Hey Timidi! Thanks for chiming in Yeah, the "normal" bios part is not a problem. But there's no need to do anything in regards to the hyperthreading/multithreading thing on the i7? I've found some people insisting that this should be switched off and others claim that it really should be on when working with Audio apps. But I take it you haven't changed anything to that? My guess is that it's safe to just install everything and just use it like that. If things run smoothly then there's nothing to worry about Yeah, tried to search too. Not easy

You should set it to full trottle. In Windows 7. So now SLEEP. NO DISK SLEEP... Stuff like that. Because second and third disks can go to sleep in 7 to save energy. Besides that. Your stuff is walk in the park. Because all the bits and bites have been ironed out. Your Motu should now be able to handle 64 samples allways... When it will stutter (at 60 tracks or so) you can freeze this and that and then push it up to 90 tracks. But I never needed to go there... Just install the board and processor. (And you need new memory.... DDR2 to DDR3 I suppose). Then take 40 tracks of audio and set everything to 96khz. So it hits hard. Then playback... www.dawbench.com for more tests.

Not easy I think you're talking about the "core parking" discussion that pops up now and then. If so, no, I didn't do anything with that. It does seem odd the way the system relies so heavily on the first core though. If that's not what you're talking about, then, I don't know what you're talking about:) One issue that I have, actually I'm not sure if it is an issue, but, it seems to me that when I'm working on stuff, sometimes when I go to access my samples drive, it's like it was asleep as it spins up when I access it. I thought I had everything set for 'go baby go' but it seems like win still puts it to sleep. idunno. Good luck with your build. BTW, I'm not a computer guru type, Just so you know.:)

That could be it Timidi. But if haven't done anything about it then that's all I really need to know I'm looking so much forward to have it all installed. It's waiting at the postoffice but I've spent the day at a concert venue I've noticed the same with the sample drive actually, that's despite that everything is set to full throttle at all times. I clicked around and did something so it stoped. If I manage to recall what I did (if indeed I did something sensible) I'll make sure to let you know. Have a great weekend!
