Rock/punky kinda song. **New Version** See post #20 please!
Here's another one I am getting closer to buttoning up with the band. I am on drums for this particular song (we switch around a good bit with this band. (we like to play musical chairs...) Advice is greatly appreciated here as I have really fought with this one to get it where it is... It's been a thorn in the side for a few weeks now as the mix just didn't want to sit together. Thanks Guys/Gals! http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=11276465&q=hi&newref=1

you guys rock for sure. I played in a few bands where some of us were multi-instrumental.... but we really didn't like switching up much at all. I believe we all sounded like we were all right handed pitchers trying to throw with the left arm..... if you know what I mean. I did end up playing the most complicated song that we did on one band on the piano because the keyboard player tried and then commented that..."Man...I can't play that song in THAT key" so I sat down and said, "do you mind?" and played it note for note..... so I got stuck playing it every time. I think the key was Bb. I guess he was like Bapu... if it's not in Am it can't be played.

Though this mix had plenty of faults anyway, Mr. Danny Danzi pointed out that it sounded mono so I checked.... Like an idiot I did my mono check and then left it there on export so this should be a vast improvement.

ChuckC, Good job overall. Great drumming! Vocals are too soft - I can't make out the lyrics (my age showing?). Check out Alice In Chains mix and note the stereo guitars, drums, bass mix and where the vocals are placed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKXIk45pL0o&feature=fvsr Rimshot

Hey Chuck, GREAT song. Your performance on the drums was SMOKIN. Mix isn't that bad on my end. If I had a nit, I put my vote also with bringing the lead vox up a bit. The drums need more spread and are thin sounding. I would play around with the EQ for more mid and low end. KUDOS! Kev

Rimshot- I need to listen to that Alice in chains tune on some cans rather tha the laptop... I have always dug their vocal work/harmonies. We currently cover "Them Bones" (I'll be playing it tonight... got another gig to do!) and used to cover "no excuses" which was a blast vocally but was a little slower and never really wen't over that well. In a past band I played "would" also... BIG SUPRISE! I hate playing the super popular played out to death songs from certain bands. Right now the guys wanna bring Kryptonite from 3 doors downback into our set. I know it goes over well but a HATE IT WITH A PASSION!! Another one that for me is like musical purgatory is Plush from STP... can't stand it! Kevin - Yeah I realize the vocals need to come up, thanks for the compliment on the drum performance. This song called for a more brutal yet simple style of playing. As for the drum EQ, alot of the tone and sound I am getting is from the "room mic" in EZ drummer wich is frustrating because even though I have the individual toms and OH mic panned out the room mic is right up the center. Actually I think I have it about 30% right because the ride is stronger on that channel in than the in the OH and I was trying to get it to the side a bit. I am havin a bit of a tough time with the toms too. In the verse I am repeatedly hitting the 1st tom/floor tom and it's getting buried in behind the bass and guitars because they are in those freqencies. And again... the panning isn't coming through as much because of the room mic but if I pull that down the whole kit sounds processed and sterile.

ChuckC, I'd put some distortion an/or chorus on the bass (not quite cutting though IMO) and check for overlapping frequencies on the kick/bass guitar.

Greatings Chuck, Nice rocker you have going. I was not sure I liked the doubled up drum part, but after a few listens thats growing on me. Listening with headset the guitars sound a bit fizzy, but after all the instruments come in I don't notice it. Nice vocal treatments as well. Rock On!

Cool song. I like how it flows. That drummer is getting a serious workout! The low end needs better definition. You can feel the bass and bass drum but there needs to be more in the upper registers to add the definition. Other than that, nice. Well done!

Hi there Chuck This is a really cool song, and I love the energy you guys exude. The mix sounds very good in the quieter parts, but a little muddy when everything kicks in. To me, getting that 'clean' mix with big distorted guitars is the holy grail of this sort of production. If you've been getting some advice from Danny on this, then all I can say is you're in safe hands, he's helped me so much in improving my recording/mixing techniques. Steve

Bapu- Thanks, and you're right... I haven't upated the file again yet but I will in a day or two. I went back and tweaked the freq. and alo tried a bit more drive on it and those added harmonics make it nice and distinct. Thatsastrat- Yep, that's was buggin' the crap outta me too. It didn't seems so on the studio monitors but in my truck the guitars on the intro sounded like they were recorded on a 4 track... Onc the songs in they seems to sit well. Maybe I'll automate the eq there. Guitarpima- I've got this issue worked out. I am ging to take a day or two off, Then I will make a (hopefully) final round of tweaks and repost. Yep my arms are generally burning at the end of this one, but that's because even though I own a kit (my vdrums) to record/write with it's been about 14 years since I was "the drummer" in an active band so I play but generally not more than 20 minutes at a time. I lack the stamina for it. =) Gr- Non the less. Thanks for listening & I'm glad you like it! Steve- Thank you very much man, yeah I think I have this sounding better now, I am using very little compression in the mastering phase and most of what you are hearing is the boost11 plug at the end of the chain. I have now backed this down a bit. with it off my peaks are bouncing around -4/-6 with it on I have it now at -.02 and only nipping infrequent peaks barely. It's not quite as loud but it sounds much better this way. If that last .2 was that important to me I'd send it to a pro to master it. I am just not good enough yet to get it there on my own so I'll error on the side of caution now. These to songs were an eye opener for me in that respect. James- Thank you sir!

Rockin tune! only thing I would focus in on is filtering out the 60Hz and lower causing some low end rumble....and I'm a bass player, so really hurts me to even say that, lol. I found with my mixes it really help tighten and add clarity to the bottom. Of course doing that is gonna make other freq stand out a bit more too. Keep rockin. Kev

No crits here. Kicks A**. only suggestion would be to change up the eq on the voc where it breaks down (where it's sort of alone) near the end. My normal instinct would be to cut the verb and go for like a telephony type thing right there (not too much though).

Thank you Steve! Timidi- I appreciate the compliment sir! I could try that I suppose. The only thing I really changed last night (since this mix) was I brought the vocals up a hair, and reversed the panning on the drums to audience perspective. During the choruses the crash that was on the right here seemed to be clashing with the higher sounding open chorded guitar part on the right. Reveresed it seems a little less annoying over the chunkier left guitars. The only issue is that I prefer drummer perspective (especially on this song because I play drums on it) and it's driving me nuts!
