Cheap multi output card for a laptop??

Hello everybody,

I' am looking for a multi output cheap card for my laptop to play stereo backing tracks live and send a click track to my drummer.
I' ve used an ipod with a mono mix on the left an the click on the right but some instruments sound very unnatural even though i don't pan things more than 30%.
I don't need inputs or preamps, just more than 2 outputs on the cheap ($100).

I've seen this card Soundblaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro USB but not sure if the left, right and rear outputs are seen as separate outputs in sonar so I can send the stereo backing track to left and right and the mono click to the rear.

If anyone has experience with this or a similar card please give advice!!

Thanks as always for your help

Most folks here say anything by sound blaster is to be avoided as far a Sonar goes. A Solution would be to simply transmit MIDI clock to an old drum machine, Or output a MIDI  C# 2  0r  F#2 or ? to any outboard MIDI sound module. This way your using your stereo outs for full sound and your MIDI out for the click track. You DO have a proper audio interface with stereo ?? Of course your backing tracks would have to be MIDI based or this would be tricky.

yeah... I'd avoid sound baster cards for that application.

Cheap...... what do you have for a budget to do this?

For example, I have a Focusrite Saffire.... I paid $300 but have seen them lower. It has 8 outputs that are all programmable as to what signals get routed where.

Any interface which has 4 programmable outputs would allow two stereo outputs for different purposes.

You just gotta look around.   check www.beaglesound.com and see what Beagle has on his site.

    Thanks guys for your recommendations,

I have a rock solid presonus firestudio project with 8 outputs that I just used this saturday but I don't like to take it from the rack every time we have a show.

I know that soundblasters are not good for pro audio but I think in this case I don't need good latency or converters or mic pres, just want a playback card with more than two outputs that I can assign in sonar that is not much more than $100.

I have even used my built in laptop card with the backing track panned to the left and sent to the PA and the click track panned to the right and sent to my drummer but for some reason the mono mix of the backing track doesn't sound right.

sonico - no disrespect intended, but it sounds like you've already made your mind up anyway.  so I am not really sure why you're asking?

    Jeje!!

What I'd like to know is if that cheap soudblaster is recognized in sonar as a multi-output soundcard and I can route different elements to each output or it's multi-output (left, right, rear, etc) is just for playing dvd's.

I know that stereo systems for live performances are not common and I think I'll start a new tread asking for some tips for mixing for mono playback because I don't like the results I' am getting.

But it would be great if someone with experience with that soundcard or a similar one could tell me if it's driver allows sonar or any other DAW to recognize it as a multi output card.

    Thanks again for your advice!!!

I don't have it, but if it has WDM or ASIO drivers that windows recognizes all of the outputs, then sonar will recognize all of the outputs.  the drivers accessed by windows are the same ones that sonar uses.  since it's a 5.1 system then I see no reason that it would not show you 6 outputs.

Thanks Beagle, I guess I should google the card to find out if it has wdm or asio drivers and maybe I'll give it a shot.
