What do I need in a laptop?

Would appreciate any feedback to the following:

Presently using for creating (recording) jazz and orchestral works:

Sonar Home Studio 4
Edirol Orchestral
Windows XP

Have been looking at laptops and will be planning on using an external USB sound card, probably Echo or Creative Labs; going to upgrade to Sonar X1, but have heard and read that Edirol is not compatible with Windows 7; any suggestions?

Thanks

I don't know if Edirol Orchestral is compatible with 64bit or not.  unless someone who has it and tried it with a 64bit version of sonar and said otherwise, then there's a possibility that it will work with 64bit sonar using bitbridge or j-bridge (a 3rd party bit bridging program).  however, I do not know for certain.

Sonar Home Studio 4 is not compatible with 64bit system, but it will run on a 64bit system.  you might have to set it up to run in "XP compatibility mode."  that's one thing I have inteded to do for a while, but just haven't gotten around to it.  I have SHS4 but I've never installed it on my win7x64 machine.  it's on my mobile rig which is winXP 32bit.

as far as suggestions for USB soundcard, yes, I have recommendations on my website.  make sure you look at all of the advice (I think there's 3 pages of soundcard advice to help you make your choice) and then when you open the soundcard recommendations, there are TWO pages and it's kind of hard to see the link to the 2nd page (I've got to fix that one of these days!).  but the USB ones are on the 2nd page.  link is in my signature, go to RECORDING HELP

An external audio interface. Don't try to use the onboard sound.
