Thinking about laptop with Intel i3

I've been looking at some laptops in the $400-$500 range with a quad-core. A few companies have models that use the i3 processor. Intel says that the i3 is a "dual core" with four threads. So, is that effectively going to give me four separate simultaneous processes?

Any other suggestions for my price range?
