2 Part question about the MC audio folder

PART 1:

I know everyone has done this in the past..... click on delete a track or a clip and not realize that something else is also highlighted...press OK and a few minutes later, you realize not only is the wanky guitar track gone but so is that once in a lifetime vocal track that you worked so hard to capture.
SO if you haven't gone too far, the EDIT>UNDO Delete tracks command will save your butt.

However, in this case..... the undo is not available as an option because...... the DAW was shut off, the project was saved and now.... the tracks seem to be totally unrecoverable.

In the audio folder, the individual waves are all still there. they are even marked by name as to what track and such.

Has anyone ever tried to rebuild a totally deleted track using this method?

I am going to attempt to do it..... I think that the track was bounced after it was melodyned SO.... it should be one of the larger files there..as in a complete track..... and IIRC the only clip is the very beginning of the track that was edited with ME after the bounce.

Yeah yeah yeah... I know.... next time look before I hit delete and close the DAW.

PART 2:

I'm doing clean up on my files....end of year stuff. Moving the projects out of C drive and into the storage and backup drives. In the audio folder, I have dozens of non-essential files of takes that didn't end up in the main project final mix. I do not need, nor do I want necessarily to keep those files. Deleting them would be the best option since all these little "bad takes" amount to a significant amount of hard drive space.

I know I can go through the project and get the name and record # and then search the audio folder..... deleting the other ones not named... but that seems so labor intensive, it's cheaper to just buy more, larger, hard drives.

What is the easiest and fastest way to remove the clips that are NOT part of the active final mix?

I was thinking Cake has a "clean audio folder" function that automatically deletes ALL the files that are not in the current project but I've never used that function. I will be playing around a bit with this on an older project to see how it works.....any advice or bewares are appreciated.

    Herb,
Good luck with rebuilding your tracks. I have never used the clean audio folder before, but that's what came to mind when I was reading the beginning of Part 2. I suggest you make a copy of a project folder and try it out. I believe it should work well, though. After all, isn't that it's function?

I was thinking the "clean audio folder" deleted the files not associated with the active project. So if I use that function before I "reinstall" the deleted clips/tracks waves, they will all head to the recycling bin.

I would need to do that after I re-associate them....

anyway, the family went shopping for the afternoon, so I'm gonna see if I can recover the track and do a few other "educational"***  things in the DAW.

*** in other words.... goof around and try to figure out a few things that I don't normally work with.

Yes, once I was recording an ensemble of 8 people singing.  before I saved the project, my assistant unplugged the power strip that the computer was plugged into.  bam!  it was all gone!  but of course, the wave files were already recorded, I just had to find them in the audio folder and reconstruct the project.  it wasn't that difficult.

yes, the clean autio function allows you to delete any wave files not associated with a project.

it frightens me since I have no control over it.  so I've never used it.  I always delete orphans manually.

I had the DAW on to work on some stuff...and really, this was one of the things.... but I got side tracked as usual, and ended up writing the seeds to a few new tunes instead....

    Oh well... maybe next time.

AFAIK "Clean audio folder" deletes ALL wavs not being associated to any project, not only the active one. I've used it in SONAR 4 and 6 a few times without problems. It lists all the files to be deleted before it actually deletes them, so you can have your second thoughts.

IIRC, in of my cases the amount of files was too big for the Recycle bin, so there was no complete Undo-option. It was an unreversable delete, so I did study the clip list.

For cleaning the active project I don't know any better way than to save under a new name, checking "Copy audio..." and then deleting the original Per Project-folder.

yes, it lists them, but you have no control over individual ones or not, it's all or nothing.  that's what I don't like about it.

    Jump....or not jump?

Hummmm.... mayhap I shall run this on the laptop files first. If it screws them up, not a big deal since I have copied them to the new DAW long ago. They are simply taking up space there so that might be the first test. I can use the space on the lappy anyway since it's getting a bit tight there.

I may be paranoid about it for no good reason.  it just makes me very "skittish" when I don't have any way to select/deselect individual files.  It's all or nothin'!

Plus there is a very strong "are you sure you want to do this?" message. At least there was the last time I looked at it.

I had a look at it and also decided to "delay" the decision. I wish they would make it more specific..... so a single song project could be done one at a time. For example when they finish the song.... run it to clean out all the clips that were not used in that one specific song. That would be great.

BTW: I went into the audio folder and found the vox track and imported it back into a new track.... so that was successful. Same thing with the original bass track.

that's been a feature request for a while.  it wouldn't hurt to add it again, the more that add it as a feature request, the more likely it will get done.
