Music Creator 6 scans

I have recently installed MC6 but it insists on scanning my entire computer everytime the program is started and then hangs because it cannot find something.

I also have Sonar 8 which also does a scan of plugins, but this is quite quick. Why does MC6 needed to scan my entire harddrive?  Thanks for an help anyone can give.

Have you checked the Plugin Managers settings? AFAIK also in MC its possible to define what is scanned at launch (I don't have MC, though).

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

Turn off the AUTO-SCAN VST's at startup.

It remembers the scanned ones and starts much faster. If you add a new VST simply run the scan right then and it's in that list for a quick start.

Press the "P" key to get to preferences.

In the Preferences menu under FILE>VST Settings, uncheck the box under VST SCAN OPTIONS that says Scan for VST plugins on startup.

well, it doesn't scan your entire hard drive, it scans the folders you have set it to scan in the PREFERENCES for VST folders.  if you've not added anything then it only scans one folder (and subfolders) which is the default location.

if it's "hanging" on something it's not because it can't find it, it's because you've got a bad plugin that's causing problems.  I would advise deleting that plugin that is causing it if it's a freebie (likely), or if it's a cakewalk plugin then there's a problem and reinstalling that plugin might help.

disabling scan at startup as herb is saying is an option, but it's not necessary, really with MC6 (and the X1 versions) because while it does scan at startup, it doesn't rescan everything that's already been scanned in the past, it just "looks" at them and scans for new ones in those folders.  scanning at startup used to rescan everything every time, now it only verifies they're still there and scans new ones which weren't there last time it scanned - which is very fast.

I have all my scans shut off by intention, and when I add a new plug I scan it manually right then.

As Beagle points out it might look like it's scanning the entire hard drive but really, it's not. Just the folders in the scan list in the  plug in manager's list.

You can add or remove items from that list. I have found that many VST's will install automatically into the VST folder in Cake, however, you would still need to run a manual re-scan after a new VST gets installed there.

Beagle, IDK about that last paragraph... that's why I shut them off. The scans always seemed to be a total re-scan on start up and were wasting time. I sat there and watched them a few times as they ran one by one through every plug and VST in the folders.  I had shut it off in MC4 so I did likewise in these new  platforms.  Now, start up and loading a song file is a matter of a few seconds.

yes, with MC4 and MC5 that was the case, but not with MC6 (and X1).  Noel told us that in a thread in the X1 forum.  that's why I just leave it on now.  I had mine turned off at startup as well for 8.5 and below.
