Skype?

Is it safe to install and use Skype for video calls on a laptop used as a DAW?

Of the instant messenger type stuff it's probably the least intrusive one I've come across.  It's only on when you turn it on.

I only use it to keep in touch with my kids and it's great for that, I don't have a webcam installed so I don't have to worry about that running in the background and I only use the chat part of it.

Like I say though, configured right it doesn't run tasks in the background like most messengers so it doesn't interfere with anything if it's not in use.

I've been totally anti messenger apps in the past and it wasn't until one of my kids insisted I try it first, it worked and I've left it there since without any problems or concerns.

    Of course YMMV.

@Jonboy is right on this. Its normally config errors that create security holes. A laptop is only a portable DAW. And Skype is just like other communications software. VOIP has no inherent risk as a protocol. Using it without considering the security implications??? That's dumb. Users cause 95% of the security problems with ANY software

I use Skype and a cam with no problems, to keep in touch with my son.

I keep one turned off, the other unplugged until needed.
    Cheers,
