Whats Going On...........cover

Live outside recording,   I don't know who wrote this song.
But it has been done by several female artists that I know of.

Mix critic welcome............. :)

Hi Tim. This is great for an outside live recording. This is really better IMO than the 4 non blondes version (original?) I like the tone of the singer. The guitar player is fantastic and breathes life into this song it didn't have before both rythmically and of course the added soloing. Merry Christmas.

Thought it might be the Marvin Gaye track when i looked at the thread title, but obviously not.

I quite like this track. I think it was most famously done by "Four non blondes". I might be wrong about that, but that's the version i know of it.

The recording sounds really good. Has a real authentic live sound with lots of raw energy.

Excellent vocalist for this type of track.

Good performances all-round.  Epic guitar solo near the end.

    Nice one.

    Enjoyed it.

Glade you liked it.   I hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas!

John...... I though someone might think it was a Marvin Gaye cover, lol .
thanks for your compliment on the recording,  I have been trying to achieve
a good live sound, but it's hard to accomplish.

I think Sheir has a nice vocal also.   Glade you enjoyed.
Hope you had a Great Christmas.

Nice mix, especially for a live recording.  Be careful with the guitar solos though, they ventured into Phil Collins territory there for a second or two at the beginning...

It's definitely the 4 Non Blondes (i was a huge fan, and am the only person I know to have seen them live )

Sounds like everyone knows what they're doing and they're doing it well. She's got a great voice.  Mix comes across well too.  :)

You really nailed this one.  Good mix and good performances.  Now, if you could teach the art of recording live to the rest of us.

    Robert...........Thank You, Glad you enjoyed.

Matt.............Thanks , I didn't even know Phil Collins played drums for 4 Non Blondes ??

Janet...........Thank You,  Yea I love Sheir's voice.  She is the singer for the National Guard.
When she sings the National Anthem it puts chills down my spine.

Lynn..............Thank You,  I don't know about teaching the art of live recording ???
Trial and error, I'm still learning the recording part and I have been at it for about 5 years.
Mic placement is "Everything" !!      I'm wanting to improve on the bass and kick for sure.
I'm looking for a real good bass direct box as we speak and learning drum re-placement.
    Lot's to do............. :)

The Mackie Oynx does a great job here. I'm guessing you used a decent splitter snake...even so, I don't hear one single mike bump or any crowd noise..phenominal live recording man! Great band and vocals too.

My opinion is that the rhythm guitar is too bright and is, thus, invading the vocal space. It would sound better if you would either dish it out a bit or roll it off there. I think the vocal needs a little tightening up and some EQ to keep it up front.

    Hey, Tim,

Very nice job on this great cover!  The band and the mix sound really great, and she definitely has a dynamite voice that's perfect for the song.

Great work as usual, Tim, and have a Happy New Year, brother!

Tim.............thanks for your time.    Yeah I love that (3280 Onyx board). The pre's and EQ on this board I think is better than my 1640 Onyx.  I don't use a splitter, I'm coming out of the board with DB-25 cables (post inserts  "effects", EQ ) into a Alesis HD24XR.     On this mix I cut out the crowd noise. I have four mic's muted, plus I use alot of gates in my inserts too.

    Knusper......thanks, your opinion is appreciated.

Bob............. thanks Man, Hope you "had" a great time bringing in the  "New Year"

    Thanks........... Tim

After listening to it again, I can hear that the guitar has actually been faded down gradually after the chorus - I hadn't listened to it that long before. And that actually did provide more room for the vocals, so the thing to do now is to fade the guitar from the very beginning of the song and you'll have yourself a good mix there.
