v-studio 100 inputs

Hello my friends,
I'm new to the forum and also new to hardware set-up.
I'm considering buying the v-studio 100 to use as an interface and daw controller. But I would also like to use it live. For that, I would need at least 4 mic inputs. I know that it has 2 xlr mic inputs. The question is: Can I use the other inputs also for mics? How can I do this? Do I need a trs mic cable so I can use the other inputs? What would be another hardware option to add to the v-studio 100 that would allow me to connect other mics and also guitar and bass, so I would be able to use it as a mixer for live gigs for a quartet or quintet?
Thank you guys! This is a great forum!

Hello martins1970, welcome to the forum. You cannot use the line inputs (3/4 or 5/6) as mic inputs, you require a mic pre when using a microphone. ----------- If you require at least 4 mic preamps, I would suggest not using the VS100 unless you already have external pre's. You might consider the Roland Octa-Capture (for the same money) is better equipped with 8 higher quality mic preamps and a software based mixer. Although it is not a DAW controller and it doesnt come with the lite-version of Sonar. Here's a utube demo: http://youtu.be/Cx8Ou_Q0_uw --------- Merry Christmas, Matt

    Hi Matt,
thank you for your reply and I hope you had a great Christmas!
The good new is that I actually have a motu 896mk3. Excuse my lack of knowledge about connecting hardware. I'm new to this world.
The Motu is a great piece of equipment but I'm struggling a bit because I need to use the Cue mix fx software and that means depending on taking the computer to the gig, what I'm trying to avoid.

It will be better if I explain the projects I have and what I need for getting the job done.
I have a solo performance with my brand new boss rc-300 loop station. It has only one mic input and I would like to use 4 mics. But I could manage with only 3 mics. The rc-300 has also a stereo line (instrument input). I'm really new to these things and I have a question: Can I use this line/instrument input for the 2 extra mics I need? Do I need 2 http://www.thomann.de/be/audix_t50_k.htm for being able to plug the extra mics?

Another reason to consider the v-100 would be the control surface feature and the fact that I use sonar 8.5 producer (windows 7 64b) and normally record track per track for my projects. It seems that It would make my life much easier to record with the v-100 even without the use of computer.
Would it also work to use the rc-300 and the v-100 together for live performance using the rc's mic input and the v-100 other inputs? How do I connect them together? I think it would be great because I can use the v-100 as a mixer and use its built-in effects. You see? Only one piece of machine and I get the job done without the computer.

I have also a 5 piece band project: piano, guitar, flute (and sax) acoustic bass and drums. In this case, I know I could use both the v-100 and the motu together so I have enough inputs. But how do I get them to work together? What's the best way to connect them? Should I send the instruments from the motu to the v-100? What's the best way?
As you can see, I'm really new to this world and help is needed.
I would like to invite you to know my projects at:

I'm really thankful for your help (and patience). It would be nice to know your music.
have a great 2012. We keep in touch!
    best regards,

    Renato

Hello martins, Christmas here was good, hope yours was too. About the mic input: the adapter you are wondering about is not what you need, you require a microphone preamplifier. A mic signal is very low and requires a preamp to boost it up to 'line-level.' Line level inputs don't have preamps incorporated in them, they are for use with things like keyboards or they can receive the output of an external preamp or other line level devices like outboard gear or cd players, etc. As i said earlier, if you require more than 2 microphones for your performances, I do not suggest that you look to buy the VS100. If you don't want to use a laptop a your gigs, then the Octa-Capture is not a good choice either. Hav a look at the Zoom R-16 http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/products/r16/ It covers many, if not all of your needs. Hope that helps.

    Hi Matt,
thanks a lot for the reply!
Christmas was really good but I will need some time away from turkey!!!
Thank you for the having the patience to explain about mic/line inputs :-) Maybe you know where to find a good tutorial on that subject and also on connecting equipment. I think I need it!
It's funny because I've been keeping an eye on the r16 and also the r24 as a second option. It seems that it would really suit better my needs because of the inputs, built in effects and it's also a DAW controller. The only question is if it is reliable and if it works smooth with windows 7 64 bit and sonar 8.5.3. Any idea?
I've been looking around and I can see that you are really helping the other guys here. I'm very grateful and I'm looking forward to learning more and also being able to help others. If there's something I could help you with percussion subjects, please let me know.
    Have a great week!

Thanks Renato, just trying to be helpful. I know the basics aren't very basic when you are still learning them. It does get easier to to understand once you begin to get a handle on the essentials... then there's a whole lot of new stuff to learn, haha. Don't worry, nobody knows it all, just be patient and keep reading and enjoy process. --------------------Here's a link to a discussion about R16/ W7 x64 drivers: http://forum.recordingrev...ivers-realeased-28942/ ---------------------- Also, check out this forum if you haven't already, there is an enormous amount of info about all subjects of audio: http://www.gearslutz.com/board/ You'll find a lot of answers there. The search feature allows you to look through previous threads on the topics you are interested in. That is very useful. HTH.
