The Plug-In Alliance

Brainworx and friends are dropping iLock. Furthermore, your plug-ins can be authorized and used on up to 3 machines at once.
http://www.brainworx-musi.../newsletter/2011-12-22

iLock license will still be available but as an option.

Hoping that others will follow. :)

Great concept and an encouraging direction. Whether you love dongles, hate them or are indifferent to them, there is no doubt that by insisting on them as your sole protection scheme, vendors (i)lock themselves out of a large group of potential buyers.

I'm curious, though about this: according to the site, "Plugin Alliance LLC is a new American pro-audio plugin-company" -- so why are all the prices listed in euros? Is this actually a shell company to get around some EU regulations?

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Strange indeed. Brainworx and SPL are based in Germany AFAIK. Not sure about the others.

Officially, it all starts January 2nd. Maybe they'll change a few things then.

EDIT - Just to clarify - after a quick word w/ them: "The ilok dongle is not optional, we only offer "legacy installers" for older product with ilok. All our Alliance plugins will ONLY use our dongle free license system"

Having recently upgraded my DAW and spending 20+ hours tracking down license codes, etc. to get all my software authrorized ... boy, do I hope this idea gains some traction.  The notion of one-stop shopping to take care of authorizations of software from multiple vendors is long overdue.

Should it become semi-universal, I have no doubts that it would become a key decision factor in deciding whether to buy a new VST.  Just as an iLok requirement is an automatic disqualification for many potential customers today, an incompaitilibity with a universal authorization service would become that sort of avoidance factor in the future.

Hope you're paying close attention to this IK (and a few others I can think of).

I was delighted w/ the approach Apple adopted. As you may know, Logic is now distributed directly through the Appstore, for a mere $200.

Additional apps like Mainstage are now available à la Carte. I never cared for it when it was part of the big bundle (Logic Studio), but for $30, I jumped on it - and am I glad I did!

You can download additional content directly from Logic's menu. Updates are also available directly. If you need to re-install, you just launch the Appstore and click install. No serial, no nothing. Great for me on the road, as I don't have to carry a bunch of dvd's with me.

I know not everyone likes Apple and I understand, and that some of that is a result of them manufacturing the hardware and the software (so in essence, your computer IS the dongle) but, still - the principle and the cut in price may end up benefiting to others as well.

Their website is online. I was hoping for a replace iLok solution but it appears to be a storefront for a number of limited mfgs. featuring a single &/or non-iLok license registration.
