Possible solution for linking Music Creator 5 and Ezdrummer

Hi all,
I own MC5 and recently bought Ezdrummer. To my amazement, it was far from easy linking the 2. I've finally figured it out and so thought I might share what I learnt with everyone else in the hopes that it might save someone some unnecessary stress.

The whole idea of Ezdrummer is that you're supposed to drag & drop a midi drum clip straight into your host program (in my case MC5). But when I tried dragging the clip, I'd get the round circle with the line through it. Basically it wasn't letting me - problem no. 1.
Solution: Run Ezdrummer as an Administrator - in other words, instead of double clicking on your Ezdrummer icon to open the application, right click and select 'run as administrator'. This solve the drag & drop issue.

So now I had a new problem. The drum clips sounded so cool in the sample window in Ezdrummer but when I dragged them over, they would play with an entirely different sound set. I later discovered this to be the drum set that comes with MC5, called
"SI-Drum Kit" - great sounds, but not the ones I wanted.

Sadly, the solution for this isn't as straight forward, but it worked for me. So here goes:
From my understanding, the drum sounds come in the form of VST Plugins. So, as MC5 comes with "SI-Drum Kit", find where this folder is. It'll be something like "cakewalk/VSTPlugins/Studio Instruments/SI-Drum Kit".
Now, you have to look for the ezdrummer.dll file. This could be anywhere. My version of MC5 didn't install correctly so I was unable to find a few of these sound files. On my system it was "program files (x86)/VSTplugins/ezdrummer.dll" (Note: if you've had issues with the accompanying program "AmpliTubeXGEAR", this .dll file is also in here.)

Copy "ezdrummer.dll" (and AmpliTubeXGEAR.dll if need be) into the "Studio Instruments" folder (NOT the SI-Drum Kit folder), as mentioned above.
Now Ezdrummer is installed in the right place for MC5 to find it. But you still have to "Insert" it.
So, open up MC5 with a new project and click on the button "Insert soft synth" then follow this lead: "Soft Synths/Studio Instruments/Ezdrummer.
A box will pop up. Just make sure that "Single track instrument", "Recall Assignable Controls" & "Ask this Everytime" are checked, then hit "Ok"
That's it. This is what I did and it worked. I now have the brilliant sounds of Ezdrummer in MC5.
I hope this saves someone a lot of grief and stress.
take it easy guys,
Stecchino

If you open it as a VST from inside MC then this won't be a problem anyway.  you're trying to open it as a standalone program and that won't integrate with MC that way.

exactly - you're not opening EZD as a VST.  that's imperative.

this is not a good idea and I would not recommend this at all.  you will cause problems when you go to update EZD when you do this and could possibly cause other problems.  the proper way to do this is to open the VST scanning options and add the EZD folder to the scan list.  you do this by hitting "P" on the keyboard, then going to FILE>VST SETTINGS and then click on ADD to add the folder where EZD is installed and then click on the SCAN VST FOLDERS.  that will add EZD to your list from where it was installed.

    Beagle speaks truth here.

    Stecchino,

It is always a good idea to come here and ask for help when you encounter a problem. We can help you to get it working the correct way.

Moving files around like you did isn't really the best way as Beagle pointed out. In a computer there are many ways to get things to work, some better than others. If you can reverse what you did without screwwing anything up, I'd try to put it back right and then add the VST via the plug in manager like it should be done.

If not, maybe it won't affect anything if you update the synths in the future.

Anyway.... we'll help if it does... to the best of our ability....and Welcome to the forum.

    Welcome to the forum.
It's not often a first post from a new user is a solution to a problem they're having, so thanks for that.

    Hello everyone,

Thanks very much for the advice. I've been searching for days to solve my problem and I was just satisfied that I finally got it to work. But now I've tried it Beagle's way and it makes a hell of a lot of sense. Mate, I've been reading the manuals both for MC5 and Ezdrummer and I've been glued to the net but I just couldn't find a solution. Then, one word from you guys and I know exactly where to look and what to do. Seriously guys, thanks very much.
For the record, I didn't move any files from where they originally were installed. (I knew that would be a real gamble) so I just experimented and copied them over. But now, following your advice, I've pointed my VST scanner to the right folder so hopefully that will be the end of it.

    Talk about a learning curve.
    Cheers,

    Excellent!

Yeah there is a learning curve, but when you start to get up the curve a bit, it really starts to be fun.

I've used EZDrummer with my MC5 for awhile now. I've learned that while the EZ line of products is indeed easy to use, they are sometimes difficult to get up and running. Well, maybe not difficult per se but a bit of a hassle. I've installed EZ Drummer, two expansion packs, EZ Mix, and a few of those expansions, and am familiar with the process now but still hold my breath when I purchase Toontrack products because I expect something crazy to happen. To wit. Just when I thought I had the whole process down pat, I had trouble even making the purchase last time I tried to download a product from them. My bank wouldn't release the funds because Toontrack changed to an overseas equivalent version of PayPal. I first called the automated line and verified the funds were there. This prompted a call to my bank's customer service line and I discovered this was a built-in consumer protection feature. Once I verified my info and gave the ok for the transaction, it went through. On one hand you can say this isn't their fault. However, as an international company with many customers residing in the U.S. you'd think they'd recognize this and work with a company here in the U.S. and Canada for North American transactions. I've had a beef in the past due to their lack of support but they have gotten much better lately. Before it was pretty much you purchase a product and support was limited to "good luck with that".
