New Song - Winter Solstice

I wrote the bulk of this on December 22nd, which was the Winter Solstice this year. This one has a bunch of stuff on it, like my 12-String Semi Hollow electric guitar, midi banjo, midi mandolin, two electric pianos, my 5-string OLP Stingray bass, a hyped up fake electric 6-string through a hyped up fake array of amps, distortion pedals, phasers, and wah-wahs. Drums are the Hit Factory kit in Superior Drummer.

I've got a subsonic generator triggering off the kick to give it more balls, and a subtle amount of white noise triggering off of the snare to give it that Mutt Lange "burst-of-air" pop.

It's titled "Winter Solstice":

Lots of energy there and cool sounds.  The timing in the beginning gave me pause for awhile, but it seemed to settle down (or I seemed to get it) before long.

Sounds like your winter solstice was a lot more exciting than mine...

    Thanks Janet!

There's weird 10/8 phrases in the front half that I tried to disguise as toe tappable music. The second half gets into straight ahead 4/4 and was supposed to be the change to longer and longer days coming. :-)

It's happening as fast as the forum software fix that's going to make it so I don't have to go back and edit every single post I make, to add HTML commands to try to format the messages correctly with Firefox. ;)

A great piece of music with lots of drama, energy and zest. "Winter Solstice"? Time of darkest night, triumph of Dark over Light followed by rebirth of light as the Mabon (Celtic Child of Light - weak, tiny but destined to grow and defeat Dark). You have the first part perfect (triumph of Dark - which is the main part of the Winter Solstice) - just add a quiet passage, as the 'promise' of the Light returning to vanquish Dark and you have a world class piece of music. And then of course you have seven more Celtic festivals to cover!

I refuse to use yet another "work around" just because someone is too lazy to update the forum software.

    Thanks Malcolmb!

It was fun to play. I especially had fun doing the little bass chimes in the first 18 seconds. Took me a few tries. :-)

This is great. With the speed of the beat in the first section I would have thought it was more like a 10/4 beat ;-)

Love the guitar sound and the rhythm is great too, although I don't get the subsonics coming through on my laptop speakers like I should. It sounds like it could be the start of something much longer.

I definitely liked it. Thanks for sharing.

    Cheers,
    Terry.

    Thanks Terry! :-)

The guitar solo part is the VST plugin "DVS Guitar", but I'm additionally running that through an instance of the VST plugin "Freeamp 3" to make it even more distorted and full of harmonics. I decided to try doing that since I'm better at soloing on keyboards than guitars, even though drums is my real instrument.

    Hi, Glennbo.
I was wondering if you had access to old Cakewalk newsgroups from back in 2001.

I am desperately trying to find a user whose songs have been made a huge psychological impact on
me for several years, and wanted to thank him and hopefully hear more of his work.

    Could you please PM me?

    Thanks so much!!!

P.S. I created this account just to contact you.  Sorry if it looks fishy.

WOW!  I like the odd meter intro, and the tone on the arpeggio parts under the lead.  The melody/lead had some really cool intervals.

    Nice job,
