How do you guys feel about buying off of Ebay?

I am going to order a new interface (at this point I am fairly sure I am going with the Saffire pro 40) and while it lists at $599 most stores/online have it at $499.

I found them new on ebay - by it now price is $399 US

I have only bought one or two things off ebay and it's not that I've had a bad experiance...  I just wonder.  Does buying this way effect warranty coverages?  any other problems to look out for?
What do you think?   I could certainly use the saved $100 on other stuff (MORE GEAR! =)-   )

I always consider warranty issues with Ebay purchases as I suspect most dealers are gray market dealers and not licensed dealers unless advertised. I still check them out by looking to see if they have a brick and mortar store location.

I mostly buy used gear off of Ebay so warranty isn't in play.

the guys behind dolphin, in the UK started as a ebay seller..

it all depends if it's new or not.. also what it is your buying e.g. speakers etc could be trashed or have replacement parts that don't sound like un-altered things.

with pro audio, I don't think I have bought anything via any auction site.. why not try b-grade from your pro-audio shop instead.. e.g. dented boxes is one thing.. but they are warrentied for 3 months

I bought ozone 3 that way, coz the box was dented £30 cheaper

a minority of sellers on ebay and other places, have a interesting relationship yet distant one with the truth.. so that's always an issue ,so check feedback also.

I sell a some things privately on ebay BUT it's not high value items etc. and you get customers "try it on" to get something for free the odd time, pity.. as you can trip them up.. and when you do, funny they change their mind.. e.g. lost post items.

Well I ended up calling my rep from Sweetwater who couldn't quite match it but came close...  I ordered it for $425 with free shipping and a free 2nd year of warranty through them.  So good enough for me.  I'd rather deal with a company I am familiar with and for $25 bucks it just wasn't worth the risks of uncertainty.   Thanks Guys.

Great.  I've tried to deal with Sweetwater on several items,  and could never get them to come off their listed price.  Maybe I need to find a different rep at Sweetwater.

I rarely buy from people who have less than 50 transactions. I have never had a negative dealer experience. I get a lot of used gear there as well. If a deal appears too good to be true, it generally is.

    Gear: A bunch of stuff.

If I am buying new Stuff, I nearly always get it from a reputable "bricks and mortar" dealer. Also where I am based , I have to use a dealer who is used to overseas shipping from the US and in Africa, just a dealer who might know what they are selling!
I've used Sweetwater for years and cannot recommend them highly enough - very professional and competitive on prices.
In Africa I use Bothners - for Africa they are exceptional.

Nice tactic.... I use that one myself.

Find the best price online and ask the local store to match or come close as...."I'd really like to do business this you guys, because you're local" and it usually works out.

I did that on my new Tele and ended up with a free hard shell case for it.

On Ebay..... I use them a lot when I have small gear to sell, or if I want to buy something small. You can normally get great deals on nice used gear at Ebay.

I've had both good and bad experiences.

It will not stop me from purchasing in the future, However I am a lot more careful on who I do business with.

I bought an MXR compressor that the person sold me that did not work all that well and they were not up front about it. How ever I just sold it on ebay and WAS up front with the buyer BEFORE they bought it and in my ad......the buyer contacted me before the purchase and asked about it's issues and I described them to the best of my ability.....they bought it any way and there was no further contact from them. So I figured they understood what was wrong before hand , asked and then still bought the item knowing ahead of time....

that being said, I bought a brand new DI box that had a loose part and contacted the seller and they replaced it with in a day....so that was a very good experience...

I've had others, like I've said. both good and bad...

Just do your home work and I would think you will be fine.....

P.S. do not always go by the reviews, they are a bit askew...

    That is great.....

I on the other hand very much dislike my sweetwater rep. they refuse to give me a new one so I just refuse to purchase from them any more.

The reason I dislike him is because of when I bought superior drummer the very next week the cross grade went down to $99 and he refused to either see if he could retro it (cause I paid full price) or even offer me some discounts on several other items we had on our list of items I wanted to purchase. He was very arrogant about it...I asked if I could switch to a new rep....no deal.....so no purchases any more.....

but I am glad that it worked out for you. Sometimes that is the way you need to be about things.....

Well, with Ebay, you have to go thru Paypal I'm pretty sure. I don't trust Paypal at all.
They've owe me $40 for like 2 years now. Want my bank info to get it. Crooks.

Did this come from Chuck Surack (owner)? - if so, that is surprising! If not, email/phone him, I am sure he will reassign you a rep.
