Cymbal Drum Roll
Ok, by the number of posts today, you can tell I'm doing nothing but playing on the PC with MC6. I need to create a tight cymbal roll lasting about 4-6 beats for my dramatic finish. The problem is that when I input multiple short notes, the effect is too stacatto. Any suggestions how I can create a smoother cymbal roll using SI Drums? Thanks!

I was not able to create a cymbal crescendo until I got Kontakt. All my attempts ended the same way yours has. Maybe one of the SI guru's will chime in with the secret.

When the note receives an on message, it must turn off the previous note. Try using a couple different tracks on different channels with the cymbal notes in the different tracks.

Kontakt is one of MANY expensive sampler libraries. kind of like Sound Center, but much more. http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/products/producer/kontakt-5/ I think you can only buy Kontakt now directly from Native Instruments (the partent company). you used to be able to buy it from sweetwater, musicians friend, etc, but no more. and often you could get a discount from those types of online retailers. however, you can still buy KOMPLETE from sweetwater, etc. but it's much more expensive than Kontakt.

The Kontakt library has some cymbal samples that allow a crescendo such as are used in orchestral music. I do not know of a way to do this in the lower priced synths. I will check next time to see if Jamstix will do this. But any synth that only has cymbal crashes will have a hard time doing this in a believable manner.

The SI drum samples are very limited in their velocity layering. Even at a low velocity, they have a little too crisp initial attack to get an effective roll. You don't really need to spent the big bucks, though. Session Drummer2 ($10 download) has much better velocity layering. I just played around with SD2, and got a decent crescendo this way: I selected the Tight Rock and Ride program. Alternating between Crash1 and Crash2, insert your notes progressively closer. Start with a very low velocity, and increase as the crescendo builds. These samples have a softer, more believable attack.

RobertB, you nailed each reason why I can't get this to work. I'll check out session drummer. I presume it works inside of MC6 as a soft synth? Happy New Year to all of you and thanks each for all of the great advice so far!

For 10 bucks AND having it work in MC6, this sounds like a great idea. I'll try it out and let you know how it works. Thanks....and Happy New Year!
