Indigo by Ascent

Happy New Year, Cakewalk friends!

One of my new year's resolutions last year was better mixing and mastering....   I'm going to carry that one over into 2012!

My band Ascent (my wife Christina and I)  is creeping ever closer to releasing our 'Secrets of Flight' CD.   'Indigo' was one of the first songs we recorded for it.   After slowly realizing the original mix was completely awful, we overhauled this song by re-recording vocals, bringing back a whole lot of midrange and high end to the whole mix... and replacing the acoustic kick drum sound using AudioSnap 2.0 in Sonar X1.

We're very happy with the results...   http://soundcloud.com/ascent-music/indigo

What do you think?

Let me be the first to say that this is a brilliant song.  It's so different than what I've been listening to lately.  The production is just right for the song, and Christina's voice is very good.  I love the chord changes and melody enough to listen to this again a few more times.  Well done.

    All the best,
    Lynn

I loved it from the first!  really got my attention right away!

Love the vocals!!  the vocals (your wife?) are smokin' hot!!!  loved the rhythm.  that snare beat is kind of overpowering, IMO, it's standing out all by itself.  love the bass, too.  really nice stuff on this!

the only thing I could comment on would be the ending.  I would have loved to have heard a "big" ending instead of a fade type.

    very much enjoyed it!

    Lynn and Beagle,

THANK YOU so much for your kind comments.  They made our day!    We've been playing this one live for a couple of years now,  and I think that helped us nail the recording.    We're going to be working on a video for this one as well.

I could listen to this kind of stuff all day. Great job! I would also try fading the snare back into the mix a bit. Otherwise close to perfect. Nice ending note.

I'm a sucker for great female vocals - wow! Wonderful melodic tune floating over the quirky and very clever rhythm if that makes sense. I've listened to it a few times, and it's a grower. Love the bass guitar sound too, well done to you both!

Bill, Janet, and Ron:  Thanks so much for listening and commenting!   We're so glad this one is connecting with people.

I hear the reasonable comments about the snare volume....  but I like the punchiness and I'm likely to leave it this way.  It's just how I hear it in my head, I guess!  It was actually much louder in the earlier mix.

Bill, I'm a sucker for female vocalists, too....  I married one!  ; )

Fantastic song. Wonderful vocals, and I love the stripped down backing and groove.

This song rocks.  I love the vocals and the rhythm is slick!  Awesome job to both of you!  The production quality is excellent.  Loved this Bruce!

    Great song and great performances.

The mix is fine. I think the snare needs work. All high end and no body.

    Very well done!

I can almost always tell a computer tune from one using real instruments. This song has the vibe that only the real thing can provide. You built up interest in the last part of the tune and the tune is at just the right length,so I never got bored listening to it.
That girl can sing and sing well. If I were at a Starbucks for coffee and this was playing in the background, I'd want to hang around  and hope it repeated again.
