Computer won't boot.

Couldn't get my computer to boot up last night. Ran a pre-boot system assessment and got the error msg 2000 - 0123.  I guess I have a bad memory module. If this is true, how do I know which one to replace?

Trial & error is one way. Take a stick out at a time with a boot attempt in between.

Remember that there may be certain memory config rules you need to follow regarding slots in use at a time. Your mobo documentation will have that info.

Guitarhacker, I don't have a rescue. Looks like I'm going to have to try one module at a time.  I don't mind if it fixes it.  I tried taking three modules out all the same kind and in the right slots. Turned on the computer and windows started downloading and it went to a black screen with a cursor and stayed there.  FBB, thanks for the advice.

    error msg 2000 - 0123

So that is a Dell system error code? If you are running a Dell, the next step after reseating your memory chips and receiving the same error is to call Dell support. If you are not running a Dell system, the error code may not be reliable.

Another option if you suspect bad memory is to download an ISO of Memtest86+, make it into a CD and boot from the CD. That will rule out a problem with the Windows installation itself, since memtest boots into linux. A really bad stick in a critical position might prevent booting at all, but almost certainly one stick is good, and you can test them one at a time if your motherboard allows single stick installations.
