Question for Acronis True Image Home 2012 users...
Does this software actually WORK for you??? So far it seems I'm having nothing but issues. I can't get it to clone a working OS partition (i.e., close the current OS partition to a new hard drive and be able to boot from that). It also has had issues backing up a partition to a location that's on a different partition but happens to be part of the same hard drive. Then, I bought a new hard drive and it "added" it with only 16 tracks per cylinder (s/b 255) with over 287 TRILLION cylinders! When I try to re-add the drive it says "You will not be able to use the entire disk space because your host operating system does not support GPT partitioning scheme. 787619.00 TB will remain unpartitioned." Really??? I'm also annoyed that it seems I need to use third-party utilities to do the other stuff I want like modifying partitions and just seeing the disk statistics! Obviously, what I'm trying to do is something wild and bizarre, right? This has now wasted a lot of my time (and caused me to buy a new hard drive that it's appearing I didn't need to get). Is anyone else having these type issues? Should I have bought Paragon instead? (I bought Acronis because the software that comes with the new drives, Seagates, uses a smaller version and from some feedback from here...)

I use true image, I have V11 on my DAW and 2012 installed on my laptop. I have had issues but I've always found a cause. I was getting verification errors in that an image would never pass verfication. That turned out to be dodgy RAM. I also struggled to perform a backup and after an online chat with one of their techs that was solved by working from the boot disk. If you are having problems try using the boot disk to see if that fixes it. 2012 is a huge GUI change similar jump that 8.5 to X1 was in Sonar world. The boot disk seems to be much better when made from that version, which was on a really good offer just before Christmas. I run weekly backups on my DAW and that has never failed to work, apart from the aforementioned memory errors.

I also had to have one of those online chats with a Customer Service agent which ended with him uploading a very large ISO file that I made into a bootable disk. I've tried using the boot disk a few times, but am still getting problems. Also, you can't do basic stuff with the boot media like copy files...

Sounds like you may be suffering from a confusion between GPT and MBR partitioning systems. Acronis apparently gives you the option to "add a disk" as GPT, and if you checked that then the new disk will be GPT formatted. A GPT formatted disk is not compatible with booting Windows unless you are using a UEFI bios. Some MB's allow you to run either a standard or UEFI bios depending on settings--some are limited to one or the other. You can check if your drive is GPT or MBR formatted by following the steps in this protocol until you get to the point where you can see if there is an option to convert from MBR to GPT. If there is not such an option available, then Windows detects that the disk is already GPT. I am assuming you are using an OS that is capable of using GPT format. As usual, the more information you give about your hardware and software (including the OS), the more likely you are to get a useful reply.

No confusion at all except in my decision to buy Acronis instead of Paragon apparently. I don't have a 278,000,000 terrabyte drive, yet that's what it was seeing (I'm only using MBR partitioning). I've migrated to a different PC and things look normal, therefore I'm going to assume that the disk controller chips on the other PC have issues. Talked to Scott at ADK today as well and am REALLY hoping that big check comes in soon so I can get someting less than eight years old to work with!

Looks like the main issue was with my motherboard (something with the disk controller or connectors). A switch to a slightly older box and things appear to be working. We'll see...

I don't think your experience is typical, not that I know why you are experiencing the problems you are seeing either. I have both True Image & Disk Director and between them there isn't much that can't be done with hard drives and images. They've saved me from melt down several times and also made things like HD replacement for both myself and companies I do work for extremely easy. They have literally saved me hours of time. Scant consolation for you I know but in answer to your original question, in my experience yes it does work and very well. Hopefully your problems are sorted now though.

What really became abundantly clear is that you need to have good backups before a problem hits...

Sorry to interupt but, I'm curious. If one has Windows 7, what is the point of buying Acronis? Thanks

FWIW, True Image is used to backup literally every DAW we build. I've use the app successfully many many times... And yes, you want to take the time to make a backup... while things are working well. It'll potentially save hours of lost time/frustration.

I started using Acronis after I lost my audio hard drive. I literally lost several projects both completed and incomplete when that drive went belly up. it could not be recovered by 2nd level data recovery (which involved replacing the circuit card assy of the hard drive with a new one). it would have required 3rd level which is physical data mining from the platten itself. and that's very expensive. so I lost that data. I now back up using acronis regularly.

I use Acronis (and have latest version). The built in Windows 7 will back up, but it's not as versitile and limited compared to Acronis. It's like a lot of the utilities Microsoft includes with the OS, there are better available.
