g_randybrown Just out of curiosity I went to Studio One's website and started watching the tutorial named "MIDI arrangement with S1 instruments".....it sounded horrible to say the least (cheesy sounding and no dynamics at all)...I don't get it, why would anyone consider Studio One as an alternative to X1? I would be willing to bet that if you spent as much time working in Studio One (or any DAW for that matter) as you have in Sonar, you probably would have a different opinion at some point in time. So much of this "my DAW is better than yours" banter seems pretty silly to me, frankly. We have such incredible options at our disposal these days, as musicians, that it makes me scratch my head when people become almost partisan about their choice. As Scott points out - options are good. I also agree there are some features in S1 that seem more intuitive than Sonar with respect to MIDI. But for me there is just no ONE perfect DAW, and it's why I do like having and using a few. There are definitely features in Sonar that out-do S1 and visa versa. But I guess in the online forums world controversy and drama fare better lol.

I used to think it was pretty cool being literate with lots of different DAWs but then I got wise and realised it was a waste of time. Also, more upgrades/patches to worry about. Now I have two Sonar and Cubase and they are so similiar I only really need one but it's good to have Cubase there in case I get a mac one day. One thing that is interesting to me is that everyone was saying Studio One and Reaper are going to leapfrog Sonar but it's been like ages and they are still years behind!

This is best - forget the DAws - I was lucky enough to be able to do recording and mixdown work here before Boputhatswana was re-integrated into South Africa in 1994. The place got closed, looted and was thought to be unworkable. It got restored, and is once again an amazing place. I would love to go there again. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bop-Recording-Studio/168430138917?sk=photos Cheers Grif BTW - Happy with X1. I do use Studio One to mix down live recordings I get using a StudioLive 16:4:2, mainly because of the easy integration of Studio One and Capture. But for recording / creating I stay with Sonar. On a side note - Can I import a bunch of wav files together?

I am very intrigued by years of missing features! In fact, I believe, you can do better then few decent vsts and x-ray. I don't believe transparent windows is a game changing mechanic to DAW musical creation. But as you say "Oh, I don't use that". Not trying to stick more wood in the fire here, but really am intrugued by your post. Thanks for the response.

But to answer your question, I switched to S1 from Sonar because the programme works as it should. By that I mean it doesn't crash and the features they advertise work exactly as they advertise. I like Sonar but I used to spend about 25% of my time dealling with problem after problem. With S1 I can just get on with creating music in a fast and enjoyable way. However this is of course just my personal experience and I appreciate others position. Though I don't really get this brand loyalty that people get so obsessed by. Even to the point that people come on here raging about Sonar but still continue using it, it makes no sense to me. Just try a few different products, you might be pleasantly surprised. If not you will at least have seen what else is out there.

I certainly wouldn't profess my DAW is better than someone elses because I wouldn't know as Sonar is all I've ever used (I ain't no fanboi and I feel I'm open to alternatives). When I heard the demo though I thought it sounded like something from the early 90s and wondered why anyone would be attracted to it. I agree the S1 version 2 sounds are not up to the Sonar stuff, but there is still plenty to use. Omnisphere, Stylus and Kontakt 5 - all work with no hitch. The VST3 plugs sound good. Down side, [for me] No Notation/Score page edit. It just means i have started to work in another way, more in the PRV. I keep reading a lot of guff about what you can't do in S1 [mostly not on this forum] But you will amazed at what you can do, with ease. And of course Gapless. But at the end of the day, use what you want to use. No one really gives a whatever. Garry

Hi Backwoods, Right! But thats not what you stated in your original post. I just don't want folks mislead about Sonar nor Studio One. If I were to say "Sonar is years behind. Studio One has gapless audio, intergraded Melodyne ARA, midi extraction from audio notes, a usable rex sampler player with note splitter, etc, etc. You see, we all use the software for various reason. My reason might be relevant to the type of production I do, while, X-ray and Sonars VSTs might be to yours. Years behind is a very blank statement, because everyone uses software to there needs. At the end of the day, DAWs are tools we use to provide a pathway to our creativity.

Studio one is not years behind anything. These statements are still made by people who don't understand or use the software deeply. In fact it does have aim assist and screensets would you believe. In terms of sounds there is a total of nearly 20 gig of content so before you criticise the sounds you need to download and listen to all of it. There are only 4 main instruments and all of them are very good and up to a high standard. I think they go by the concept that you are going to use other instruments as many of us do. I was not using anymore than 4 Sonar synths at a time when I was using it regularly. You don't want to put all your eggs in one basket and use all the synths from one DAW anyway. Any demos one may hear that sound bad are only a result of the music being bad, the choice of sounds and productions being bad. It should not happen but it does. A demo for anything should be done to its best in order to show things off in a good light. Presence sounds incredible and magnificent and as good as any virtual instrument I have ever heard. Most of the Sonar instruments do come up inside S1 making it only more powerful. People miss the point about Studio One. It is not trying to compete on features with other DAW's at all. It has been built from the ground up and started out as a solid frame. They are putting things inside the house so to speak slowly and rather carefully. As others have said here, everything that is there works very solidly. The size of the core program is only 50 Meg (at the moment) and I see that the Sonar download is over 600 Meg. Is Studio One 12 times inferior to Sonar? I don't think so. They have a pretty powerful program right now for a core size of only 50 meg wouldn't you say. If you want deep and complex features there are options like Pro Tools for example which is the reason I chimed in the first place. After doing two Avid courses I have found out what it can do and it is pretty incredible. It is stablity that I am really after not features. Studio One is very stable and would never let me down in front of a client or anytime. It has basically never crashed on me once in over a year now. Tools looks and feels good on a 12 core Mac too and I don't see it crashing either but I have not lived with it for a long time so I cannot really say. I think it has got a pretty good rep in that area though. I say stop comparing programs on features and how they sound. They have all got tons of features and sound great. Start comparing on stability and it is interesting to see who the leaders are in that area.

Actually Jeff Sonar Expanded is completely stable for me. Izotope Alloy crashed Studio one every time which was one of the reasons I dumped it. 600 megs is nothing. My computer eats that ____ right up. And Scott, I wasn't saying you were unwise. I was saying I was unwise. It's like that Monty Python thing- you've taken the wrong end of the stick and are beating all around the bush with it. Hi Brandon thanks for that. I was not implying at all that program core size is related to quality but rather that they do vary for some reason. I have been trying to figure out in fact what the Sonar core size is and I see it is what you say. I only got the 600 Meg from the demo download but I suspected you may be including some content in that. But if it is 111 mb then why cannot the entire program be downloaded and replaced as opposed to a patch for example. I am just curious about this. Is approach one better than the other? This was the topic of another thread at some point a while back. It seems that that sort of size would not be an issue either. Even FL Studio is 223 Mb at the moment which is also not a biggie download etc..

Learn to tap into the awesome power of your subconscious mind. All the power you could ever need to achieve anything is right within you! After over a half century of life, that fact has only recently become absolutely evident to me. I copy/pasted/googled it to find out who you were quoting and it would appear it was coined by you....wow, I salute you my friend...that phrase had to be a Divine gift. EDIT: I forgot to add, I saw Quincy Jones in a TV interview recently where he professed the same thing....I think it was something like (paraphrasing here) "if you are going to develop into anyone of relevance in music....you have got to tap into that subconscious mind man!"

Hi g_randybrown Well the book to read is 'The Power of Your Subconscious Mind' by Dr Joseph Murphy. I did make that saying up but it is only a result of reading that book. That book will change your life! In the book are prayers that you can say to yourself as you fall asleep and when you first wake. Also at the end of every chapter is a summary of all the points in that chapter. I have recorded me narrating all the prayers with beautiful ambient music underneath and I have also recorded all the summaries too. The prayers can only be done just as you are falling asleep and when you wake. But the summaries can be listened to anytime. Both combined are very powerful and amazing. If you buy and read the book I will send you a copy of the prayers and summaries. If you are going to pray, the best thing to pray to is your subconscious mind from your conscious mind.

Zo Freddie you can label near audiosuite features : the ability to open several plugins gui at the same time ......lol !!! i mean lloollllll What i really like : track list view and clips view now ..... they way it's opitimized space for sends and plugins ...sonar sends are just not right !! for real ... Yes To round up the biggest new killing features in Pro Tools 10 are: * The possibility to have more than one GUI of plugin open in the same time...Both the EQ and the Compressor "open" in the same time" on the screeen. (Note--->not by default.. You still need to press a button on every single GUI to make that happen) LOL.. I mean come on... * The possibility to add Clip gain. * One feature that so many Pro Tools users have asked for in years; Record in 32bit floating... I do understand that all Pro Tools user think these new features are killing features for their beloved Pro Tools platform. No doubt they all are very important essentials features. In Pro Tools World, these new basic features are new to them but for rest of us on other platform we consider this very basic "lowtech"-features, that has been around for over 10 years time. To Quote an AVID spokesmen " a lot of high-end stuff going on in the background to make these new technologies work in Pro Tools 10" If they consider that as highend, that should say it all.

I recently purchased S1v2 and have been using it for our latest projects. I've been a Sonar user since ProAudio days. We mainly record audio (guitars, vocals, and such) and the performance of S1 is noticeable on my PC compared to X1. My thought was to use both when necessary, but so far everything I did in X1 I can do in S1 (only smoother). I actually didn't use any of the VSTi's included with X1 when I used it so that wasn't an important decision factor for me. I personally lost my love of X1 with all the Expanded nonsense as I felt like they were moving away from being a great open (allow third party people to create great FXs) DAW to being the swiss army knife for all things music (and add a few more paid-for features to upgrade). I do hope Cakewalk changes their ways as I've long paid the annual fee of upgrades and used it for a few CDs of ours. However, at this point I'm happy with the S1 journey and I really wasn't expecting it because Presonus isn't what you would think would be a "DAW" developer. Very solid DAW. Sonar X1 is a great product if it works well on your machine. For me, since X1 it was much more PC tweaking then making music. Tom

Some people are saying that their experience with Studio One has been good. Can you tell me what has been so good about it? In other words why?
