Forgotten Keys: Old Drum Machines (sample libs)

I don't know how I missed this site before, but recently saw a reference to it in another forum, and have been checking it out for the last couple of days...

Wow!

A great collection of old drum machines as sample libs - Kontakt format - at very reasonable prices.

Check them out:

Well I checked the site and they were SO cheap I thought why not - and its not just drum machines - there's an Elka String and a Yamaha string package - downloaded no hassle, just tried them - honestly for the money these are OK, even pretty usable - just off to use the Elka Strings in something I am doing now.
I hope other library manufactures go the cheaper route - like Hollow Sun - I bet they are making more money as they sell far more product I would have thought - I mean you hardly have to think about $5 or $10 but when its hundreds of dollars, you most certainly do think about any purchase.

PS I also hope Library Manufacturers think about alternative formats, like Mach 5 - purely selfish at this stage (as I recently purchased Mach 5!), but if Kontakt's dominance of the market were shaken a little , it might just make NI a little more receptive to what their customers are saying!!!

I know the chap at Forgotten Keys.... we've helped each other out on a few things....

He's a clever (and nice) bloke, makes truly great stuff which he has elevated to a new level now he's using K4 - just buy it.

    And @ Bajan...

The 'no-brainer' business model can work. It's not unique - look at iPad/Phone apps, for example. There's a hint of the old "stack 'em high, sell 'em cheap" mentality to it but that only works sustainably if the products are consistently good.

But what I like about it is that more people get to play with the stuff and I'd rather have 100 sales at £5 than 4 sales at £125 ... IYSWIM - it puts stuff in the hands of people who couldn't (maybe) normally justify it. And it helps reduce piracy - it's just not worth arsing around on the torrents and filesharing networks when you can get it instantly for the price of a Starbucks.

Where it falls down slightly is that 'professionals' can sometimes sneer at it because it's inexpensive.... like if a library isn't seriously expensive and doesn't contain terrabytes of data, it must be sh!te! Bollocks!

And we'll be looking into Mach 5 at HS Towers this year as well. My scriptmeister is quite moist about the gusset looking at what its scripting has to offer. But he's a sad boy and I should let him out more often! ;)

    Cheers,

Thanks for the reply - the news on Mach 5 is great - I am really getting into this and whilst there are a few things kontakt has in its favour (quicker loading times being the biggest probably) with my new super duper Windows 7 64 bit Computer, this actually is only a minor advantage (they both load quickly as compared to my old 32bit machine!)

I hope your business model is working and continues to work - and I also hope you get 200 at $5 as opposed to 4 at $125!!! That way EVERYONE"S happy. And the more happy you are the more products we get to play with!!

Just to re-emphasize this, last week I got a "special" offer from another library producer - I think it was money off for a new year sale, plus money off as an existing user and money offer as the day of the week had a "Y" in it!!
Anyway with all the money stuff the library was still a $100.
It was a lovingly sampled single instrument - I listened to it - sounded beautiful  but a little esoteric - and then I thought careful:-
    1) If I didn't buy it now I would lose all those discounts
    2) But if I did buy it, how many times would l use it in the sort of music I am into

Well common sense prevailed - I realised I might use this once or twice, then as it was SO unique sounding, that would be it.
Now if the library had been $10 I would have just purchased it!

So I hope you and the guy at forgotten keys keep doing the business - I am just producing some new stuff at the moment and each track has it's usual quota of Hollow Sun stuff on it, plus now I'm adding some Forgotten Keys as well!
    Cheers
    Nigel
