Saffire Pro40, Chipset, old laptop

Hi everybody! I dont know if anyone can help me on this one but I dont know any other forum with so many knowledgeable people. I am still debating between Roland Octa capture and Saffire PRO 40... So my question is, how can I find out what kind of chipset has my laptop for the i.LINK™ IEEE-1394? My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite M55-S331. So the actual question is if the PRO 40 is compatible with my old laptop. Sweetwater has an expansion card that most likely is compatible but I am trying to cut down costs. To clarify, that laptop is not my main system. I just take it out sometimes for field recordings with my MBOX2 and it works really well. I dont plan to buy a new laptop anytime soon so if I can get 8 channels in to that laptop I will be the happiest man in the world. I also want to add that for the field recordings I record on an external Glyph hard drive via FW. So IF the PRO 40 works do you think I can daisy chain the GLyph HD? Thank you all in advance! How to I write with paragraphs in this forum?

I have a Saffire Pro 40 that I've been using for 3 years, however it has "bit the dust" and as it's out of warranty it's history.  The quoted estimate from the company in N.Las Vegas that is the factory authorized US repair facility has quoted $200 (plus shipping) just to look at it (2 hours minimum at $100 per hour labor charge).

I'm also through with Firewire, I'm going strictly with USB.  The Saffire Pro 40 uses the DICE firewire chipset and the DICE wants to see a T.I. Firewire chipset in the PC.

I have ordered a Roland Octa-Capture (due in today via Fed Ex from Sweetwater) to replace it.  This will work out better as I can also use it with my Laptop for on-site recordings.  My Laptop does not have a Firewire port, as do most new/newer Laptops.

I've got a utility program that I got from Presonus a while back.  Leave me a PM with your e-mail address and I'll send the program to you.  I'm not sure where to get it, I checked the Presonus site and didn't see the link to this program.

Thank you fireberd for your reply. The truth is that I am leaning towards the Roland too... the reason that I am considering the Saffire is the optical inputs (thus expandability for another 8 tracks) and that its virtual mixer has pre/post volume/gain indicators. I know I can use SONAR as my mixer but as an ex EMU 1820 user I really like this feature. Both my desktops have TI FW cards so no extra money on that. Otherwise the Roland has top notch reviews and I really think that it is probably going to be the winner in the end. I cant wait to hear your review of the Octa capture! Have a nice day! PS you have a PM
