HELP !!! My D.A.W. is in big trouble

Hello all

My DAW is crashing and Im attempting to shore up long enough to pull the important stuff of the hard drive.

Believe it or not Im still  I was still using an old Dell Dimension 4600. Windows XPS2 OS. Duel Pentium 4 processors 2.9Gb each/ 800khs @ buss. With 512MB of RAM x2.
Sonar 6 PE, with ECHO's MIA, and LAYLA on the front end.

As of now my keyboard is un operational. The BIOS is reporting a change in memory. And the device manager is not populating.
I have been able to boot with the disc drive first in order using the XP disc. Ive also opened Sonar successfully. But nothing beyond that.
I have been able to open an occasional file in Sonar but cant do anything with it. Literally nothing.

So far my best conceived plan is to reinstall the OS and necessary drivers.

Will that work?

I know that this is stuff probably best dealt with by the people at Dell, and Microsoft. But I also know that there are lots of you hear just as capable. And quite honestly timely'er with response.

So any and all help would be so greatly appreciated guys.

Thanks a bunch,

MP3ISTHEDEVIL

p.s. I will be posting this thread in several spots in the Cake forums. So I apologize in advance. ; )

if your keyboard is not responding and your bios is reporting a change in memory then NO, I would not recommend reinstalling the OS and drivers.  I would recommend removing the hard drive and putting it into another computer.  to me your problem doesn't sound like a hard drive problem, it sounds like a motherboard problem.

I've had similar things happen in the past where the machine would not boot at all..... I did as Beagle suggested you do, setting the drive up as a slave drive in the other computer. I had to switch  the jumpers to get it to act like a slave drive.

I was able to access the second drive and retrieve all the important data from it.

I 2nd what Beagle said. It does sound like a motherboard problem, and I wouldn't re-install Windows.

Have you tried running a memory test?

Have you tried using the keyboard on another computer to see if it's working? Do you have a USB keyboard you can use to see if the USB ports are working?

Because the Device Manager is not populating, that appears to be a sign that the motherboard is gone bad.

I would recommend you to use Windows 7 x64 instead of old XP32.
That's your main problem and why it aint working for you. You will see that I'm right...

The Dimension 4600 will not run Windows 7 (or Vista).  Dell only has drivers for XP and some of the hardware requires Dell drivers - non Dell drivers will not work.   I am one of the "techies" (Dell calls us "Rockstar's" and gives us forum moderation priviledges) on the Dell users forum.

My suggestions to his other identical post should be looked at first.

we've already given you advice on this and the other threads.  have you done any of the suggestions yet?  I don't see much point in giving you more suggestions until you have tried the ones already given.

    Beagle,

I have tried suggestions given by forum members. But settled on data retrieval with the dell and to buy a new computer with a DAW dedicated build.
The link below will take you to the thread that were presently using.

Id love any input you might have on the build. :  )
