AURIA: 48-Track Recording System for iPad

WaveMachine Labs has teamed with PSPaudioware to offer a powerful vintage-inspired channel strip on every channel, plus a mastering processor on the master and subgroup channels. Auria also features a first among mobile apps - VST plugin support; Auria includes several bundled plugins (convolution reverb, stereo chorus and delay, classicVerb and a pitch processor). Plug-ins by PSPAudioware, Overloud Audio Tools, Fabfilter and more will be available through in-app purchase. WaveMachine Labs is pioneering the effort to develop the VST standard on iOS, allowing manufacturers to easily port their existing plugins to the iPad.

Impressive. There seems to be a lot of development for tablets and touch screen. Even if I'm on Mac, I have yet to seriously look at all the iStuff. I still prefer having a keyboard and a mouse. On the other hand, I've come to rely heavily on what they call gestures using the trackpad when working in Logic.

That being said, I'm less and less certain that there'll ever be another conventional "tower" in my studio. My next set up will probably be iBrid.

I see FabFilter & PSP plugins listed at low price points i.e. Pro-Q for $19.99.
I wonder how they compare to the regular plugin versions or is it a per session fee?

I was wondering what the Fabfilter plugins would cost.  I went on the FF site but could not find any reference to IPad versions.  So, are they going to charge $19.99 for those that already own the plugins?  We pay for the plugins, they come in several cross platform versions:  au, vst, vst 3 Rtas, so why would we pay extra for the IPad version?  I think if we own the plugin that we should get upgrades for other platforms as they become available.  I get the au and rtas but don't use them.  I know, I know... I am just being stubborn.  Anyway I don't own the IPad, but still if I already have the FF plugins, shouldn't it be an upgrade to my account?  Just venting.

    bitflipper,
I had done some work using the Alesis iO Dock and it has a coupl eof phantom powered inputs.
Also I tried using my PreSonus AudioBox VSL22 and again only two mic inputs.

The thing about the iPad's is the class compliant USB architecture.  This is accomplished through the camera connection kit.  You also need to use a powered USB hub to connect the USB audio interface and depending on the number of inputs the interface has that will be what shows up in the DAW.  This I know for a fact is true in my experience using Harmonic Dog's Multitrack DAW App.

It will be interesting to see exactly how far they can really push it.

As the replacement for the old-school "porta-studio" I think this is pretty cool.

For more serious work, I just don't see the practical side.  The power of a fast desktop dwarfs most laptops... let alone tablets.  I don't know about everyone else, but I can't imagine taking a 5+ year step backward in processing power.

I don't think anyone would replace their set up w/ an iPad and Aura.

And if people get onboard w/ this application, one of the first thing I would expect to see is users asking for a desktop version, so that they can further tweak and finalize their work.

Auria supports AAF to export your projects to any app which has AAF support.

Maybe - But I've got a drummer friend that doesn't have any recording setup and wants to start recording his band live.  He has an iPad already, so all he needs is this software and a usb audio interface and he can start recording.  So he starts at the ground floor with this setup.  He can always use a Desktop if he needs a bigger screen or more functionality.  I wouldn't be surprised if this company would come out with a Desktop version that would include more functionality in the future.

I can see a lot of first time users starting on this platform.

I've got a few music apps for iPad but this is the first one that has really impressed me. I've only done some casual fiddling over the past day with it but it's great to be able to work with audio files (no midi at this stage) in such detail with your fingers. Easy for zooming in and out, editing, using automation, and it's quite decent effects and a nice mixer. It doesn't have OMF import/export for use with Sonar but I'm going to request it on the app's forum. Clearly it's no replacement for a desktop but it's a different beast. I bought it because I'll be away from the home setup for a month and I'll use it for developing ideas. So, while I don't have any plans to attempt to use it for "more serious work," I must say that it is seriously interesting.

Posted my request in the forum. It seems that OMF is not feasible with iOS, unfortunately.
