this is actually the wrong forum for this and if a mod sees it here they will move this to a different forum.

To answer the question ....NO. If you play them to do a job, they have no rights to the music in any way, shape, or form....unless...... it specifically says they do in the paperwork you sign with them. Read all the papers carefully. But NO.... it is not industry practice for a mastering/mixing house to get a share of the songs.

Copyright.... if you are manufacturing a CD for commercial release.... to sell to the public, yes, you want the songs copyrighted. You can register them all as a collection and you only have to do it ONE TIME.

A song copyrighted 10 years ago and released now does not need a new song copyright. Copyright is an involved topic and reading about it online would help you. But essentially, you copyright a song one time. Copyrighting of the CD (mechanical copyright) is separate from the songs.

If you have either a publisher OR a distributor involved, you really should speak with them about this topic since they generally will handle ALL that for you.

    Hope this helps a bit.

Yeah.... if you buy a program with loops, generally they are royalty free and you can use them. With loops it always pays to read the fine print in the license agreement.

With most synths that use samples this is the way it is. If you bought the program and are a registered user, you also have the license needed to use the samples royalty free...legally.

Get a good book on the business end of the MUSIC BUSINESS... One that I have and refer to from time to time is called This Business of Music. There are others. Contact BMI or ASCAP and visit their website. Writers and composers can join either one for free, and then you get access to all the info that have. Join a songwriters group in the genre you write and there will be lots of help from them too.
