Drumming With My Fingers

I mostly use the Slate Old Zep Kit and play the whatever beat I want with my fingers using my keyboard. I usually do that when I can't find a pattern I like which is most of the time. It works well for me. Does anyone else do this? I'm curious. Thanks for your response!

P.S. I only have SD3

I don't use a keyboard, I use a ZenDrum LT, which is a very nice MIDI controller for percussion:

    http://www.zendrum.com/catalog.html#lt

I play all my drums 'for real', where real means I play them all on the Zendrum, so all the timing and dynamics are being controlled by me in real time as I record. It makes all the difference in realism.  The only real gotcha is that it's hard not to be come the "Fifty Foot Drummer from Hell" when you start getting into it, and playing too hard, which will max out the velocities on all the hits and destroy the quality of the performance.

I have done my midi drum tracks on my keys for over 20 years and  really enjoy composing and recording the percussion parts this way. I usually begin with a basic snare/kick track and eventually rewrite and rework each part of the set on separate tracks. this allows for unlimited edits for velocity, quantization, layering, eq, panning, etc.  I use pads or midi drums occasionally, but the keys work best for me.

    Absolutely, Bill.
I have my e-drum set now, but for years I pounded out drums on my keyboard. For hand drums, it is still  a better choice( ie: the tabla in Khyber Pass9).
The drums in Celebration were done on the keyboard.
Probably the most fun was this one:
    http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=6879681

It has at least two drum tracks merrily thrashing the keyboard.

It starts out a little lumpy, but I was trying to represent a Chrysler big block. They were cold blooded buggers.

I've been seriously lusting after one of these ever since I first got to play one at NAMM.

Or the slightly cheaper version (10 pads instead of 15):

If you're a keyboard player, you'll adapt to this in 10 seconds. All of my dexterity is in my ten fingers - none of it made it down to my feet. I can't dance, and I will never be able to play kick and hi-hat at the same time. But with this gizmo I can go nuts. It's even more impressive in the hands of a real drummer.

EDIT: That was weird. Chrome wouldn't let me insert image links. Maybe I'll have to use Chrome for entering text and IE for pictures. Remember when the promise of the web browser was that it was going to be universal?

Your images are showing up here, Dave.
I've noticed that lately a lot of things give error messages, then work anyway. Weird.
Those units look pretty cool. I am planning on adding an Alesis Control Pad to my lineup, but there is still something about hammering the drums out on a keyboard that is just kind of fun.

Here's a good demo of the ZenDrum, though it's the older V3 model, which isn't as powerful as the newer V4 version:

Here you can see him showing how he's setup his V4 using external pedals which makes it more flexible:

    Constantly.

I've bought an M-Audio Trigger Finger a few years back, thinking it'd be better than a midi keyboard, but that thing sucked so bad. The only M-Audio product I've tried which I'd recommend anybody to steer clear of.

Eventually I'd like to get a midi drumkit -  I've seen Berhinger announced a few for NAMM, so I guess there'll eventually some cheap one out there for me.

That being said, I'll probably end up still using the keyboard most of the time. I'm no John Bonham. Heck, I'm not even half a Ringo. But I love the idea of beating the crap out of inanimate things. ;)

I had a client who sent over a song with drums he'd played himself, with fingers. He was pretty good, there were fills all over the place and he only went out with the click for about ten seconds of the song.

Yep, fingers on the keyboard, but I rather have a real drum set (since I can play drums although getting almost too old for that anymore).
(I don't like doing the main drum set in different tracks.)
(I also find that I am not really here to adhere to the metronome either, no flow with it, and I doubt if you can tell the difference in the first place. I am not a robot.)

Yes, Bill... I do the same as well. It works, but I've been hoping to fix my nanopad which is probably a better solution. It just hasn't  been worth the effort, though.

Most pads intended for triggering by fingers suck. Haven't tried the Korg thing, but I have an M-Audio keyboard controller with 8 pads and they suck. Maybe they're meant to be played with sticks, because they miss a lot of hits when played by hand.

That's why I am so jazzed about the Roland products - they've got the balance just right. No false triggers, no missed triggers. You can play them very dynamically if you want to.

I just did a benefit concert last Saturday with a drummer who played the HandSonic. It was phenomenal. We're scheduled to do it again in a couple weeks and some of that performance will go up on YouTube. I'll post a link when it does.

I use a Korg PadKontrol.  It is very expressive.  It's like a 4x4 matrix of finger pads (16 pads total).  There are only a couple things I don't like about this arrangement - 1) the matrix arrangement is not that ergonomic - I find my fingers kind of "tripping" over themselves when doing fast fills.  The roland looks like it is layed out more naturally.  2) 16 pads is nowhere near enough to cover all the articulations I use.  I use probably a dozen for HH alone.  So I have a few sceens set up - one for basic kit.  One for Kick, Snare, Toms.  One for HH, Crashes and Rides, etc.

The roland looks pretty cool, but it looks to have even less pads.

Thanks again for the in put everyone! I'm pretty happy with my EXRs keyboard. I'd still like to try some of the pads out but due to funding I' have to wait a bit.

I am using Ez drummer and recording my tracks with a roland V kit but at times if something is a hair off I wold love to know how to assign keys on my qwerty keyboard to the different midi notes for touch ups.  I have heard others talk about using a standard qwerty before but have no clue how to do it.   Any ideas guys?

Edit: maybe that' a bad idea after all....I get so many typo's when simply typing! :)

Bomes Mouse will allow you to use your qwerty keyboard for MIDI input. It requires some virtual MIDI routing and is limited, but it does what it's supposed to do.
For what you are wanting to do, the PRV is a far better option. It is easy to see errant hits, and make minute corrections. Just watch your snap-to-grid setting. I usually leave mine set to real time.
You can also adjust velocity on individual hits if needed.

+1 on the Roland hand drums. I had the good fortune to borrow one from a friend and mess around with it. The built in samples sound great!
