Song management database for overloaded working musicians
I play in multiple cover bands these days that have required me to learn and maintain well over 100 songs. This database was created to maintain my notes and print my own set lists so I'd have reminders right there on my set list, in the hopes of avoiding those on stage "what key is this in?" moments. I do consulting and Access development for the day jobs and pulled some of my tricks in to this. So here's what it does: - Maintains unlimited song data with unlimited free form text notes and a band field for grouping the songs into different bands
- Creates and keeps histories of set lists by double clicking songs in the list
- Set lists can be reordered by click and dragging up or down the Access record selectors
- Print practice lists with all songs for a band, set lists with notes, or just plain old set lists
- Link songs to MP3 files on your drive or network and click to play them
- Create and play M3U playlists for any set list with related MP3's
This is based in Access 2007, so if you have Office 2007 pro your set. If you don't, it should prompt you to download the free Access 2007 runtime from Microsoft. It's pretty lightweight so don't worry about it being a resource hog on your DAW. Get it here: http://woggmusic.com/WP/?page_id=576 *edited in IE9 because Firefox decided to destroy all formatting.

I just updated the version posted with the ability to add attachments to songs in the database directly. That's not for MP3's or audio files, but intended for charts or sheet music for that kind of gig. When you print a set list it will check for attachments and save them off in order of the set so you can print up your charts and have them in order for the gig.

Thank you for the contribution. Nice studio photos BTW. I don't have MS Office but was wondering if you think this might work in Sun Microsystems' Open Office? I have no problems opening Word docs but have never tried any of the other bundled programs. My guess is no but thanks for taking the time to share.

That thing is really heavy on the Visual Basic, I don't think open office will convert it well. This right herE: http://www.microsoft.com/...n/details.aspx?id=4438 allows you to run Access 2007 applications though without a full Office install. It won't let you modify anything, but it will get it running.

Thanks, downloading now. What version of VB did you use? I am still stuck with VB5.

No stand alone VB, just the VBA environment available in Access. All the Office apps have a pretty darn good Visual Studio like VB code editor. I do have an old VB6 copy somewhere, but at work it's Visual Studio 2010 and .NET stuff that I know just enough to be dangerous with.

OK. Thanks for the info. I have it downloaded but have yet to have a chance to check it out. I know what you mean about being dangerous with coding. At least its fun. Thanks again for sharing.

I'm downloading now, this looks like a great tool. I might suggest that you make the download from MS for VB runtime available as a link in the setup or at least on your website instead of having to try to type the url manually from the popup window in your setup. old eyes have to squint to see all those ".'s"

I have another complaint suggestion: after installation, I couldn't find it anywhere to run it! there was no desktop icon, no entry in the program files - and since I chose TYPICAL installation, I had no idea where it installed or what the program was called even! I had to uninstall and reinstall using custom just to find out where it installed it!

There's an option to create a setup package with the Runtime installation integrated, I'll post that puppy up there too when I get a chance.

I just added the full installation download with the Access runtime included. No Office installation or crazy URL typing required!
