no sound from computer's sound card

sonar x1c producer expanded will not recognize my computer's Realtek HD sound card and i cannot hear my audio through computer's speakers. just bought sonar x1 so i'm new at this daw. i have a Frontier Design Group Dakota PCI card and it is working to input audio through ADAT lightpipe cables from my black face ADAT recorder. I am able to record the audio on to an audio track in Sonar X1 but can't hear the play back through the computer's sound card. is there a list of compatible sound cards for Sonar X1? Or, is it simply due to an error somewhere else. thanks

Is the PC's sound card recognized by Sonar and setup as a device?  Some sound devices do not have ASIO drivers and won't be recognized.  If there is no ASIO drivers you can try the free ASIO4ALL program but I've run into problems with that and had to remove it and reinstall the drivers for my separate recording device.

Click Edit then Preferences.  In Audio Devices, if the PC's audio (RealTek) is not detected then it's probably an ASIO issue.  If it's listed, check the entry so it can be used.   In the Playback and Recording you can try different Driver Modes, other than ASIO to see if gets detected.

I'm thinking that since you are able to record it successfully in to Sonar, that Sonar recognizes your card. Have you set the output for your track with the audio to the proper path? If your track outputs to "Master," then you will need to check the output of your Master bus. Make sure it is routed properly through your card.

If you are asking if you can use two sound cards, I think the answer probably is no. Don't you have outputs on the Frontier? The inputs and outputs go by one sound card as far as I am concerned.

Using ASIO drivers (the most recommendable) you can only use one soundcard at a time. WDM drivers don't have that limitation.

One should not use the Realtek for anything with SONAR, though

What have you selected as your Recording and Playback Timing Masters?.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

I have a Dell laptop with which I was never able to get the factory card to work correctly. I never did get sound out if it with any Cake products.

I used an external interface with it quite successfully. I could have Cake open and running and at the very same time, have my headphones plugged in and be listening to an MP3 from the factory card.

So yeah, 2 sound cards will co-exist peacefully in the same machine at the same time.

ASIO drivers can not be shared so only one of those cards can use ASIO at a time.  Most factory cards do not like ASIO so that is usually not a big problem either.
