mixing down with multiple compression options
hey guys,
I need some advice on mixing down or making a nice mix, not neccesarily mastering. When you have multiple compression options.
I am somewhat familiar with Boost-11 and have used that in the past-usually on the master out. I would like to get and try out that pro concrete limiter if I ever get the expanded producer X1... looks much more versatile, especially for drums and bass...
Anyway, back to the topic. So you have on-board compression capabilities IN the vs-100. I haven't even tried that out yet. What would be a good basic setting for say pop vocals? and how do you set it up? I know if you use that effect with the vs100, that is something permanent that you can't undo as far as I know....
So let's say you use the vs100 for some mild vocal compression. It's said and done-sounds good, you don't need any more really.
Aha, but you have multiple options though. Like using the v-64 patch/strip/plug-in whatever you want to call it. There's compression in there you can still dial in. And there's options to use that compression in there-before and after-uses another term-on the output signal or input I guess... but that is undoable.
And if you plan on using Boost-11 say on the master-wouldn't that actually compress the vocals you've already compressed even further depending on the setting/gain/boost? What I am getting at is that as you know too much of a good thing is not always a good thing.
So I'm wondering if you've already compressed your vocals or anything, will that adversely affect your sound if you were to go ahead and use the boost-11 limiter still? Or maybe you would want to use the boost-11 on the master out AND simply take your vocal and remove it from the master out by changing the output. Or maybe you could have one Boost-11 on the already compressed vocal track and have it on a very mild setting-say 1-2 db boost and to cut out any clipping of course and another Boost-11 on the master out, with the vocal track routed elsewhere from the master, so that it's not being re-processed too much... Like a good general setting i'd use boost-11 on the master was around 5-6 DB boost/gain...
I hope this makes sense to someone on here! :) Might sound kinda silly, I just know there can be complications when trying to overcompress something or compress it one time around and then comrpess it some more with other stuff, like in the mastering process.
What do other people like to do on here with regards to that? Is the compression on the vs100 any good or do you prefer using say the compressor in v-64 strip or some other cakewalk effect?
