where I send the bill.. will you be paying USD ? that'll be $64... and GB £32

but anything that has to be REALLY precise or HAS to do time sharing / polling in realtime (it's "must do" or something , I've forgotten my realtime systems :( lectures ) , does seem to bring up that BSOD. much as network card sharing with my soundcard will mess up music progs

the SPDIF is an odd one though, I had an spdif out from a sw1000 xg, to a delta 1010LT and you'd think they would sync.. nope.. they'd "unlock" and using analog cables was the only way. not sure if it was to do with what the SPDIF "spec" is on each card, and them conflicting.. I know I had to clock down a 48 to 44.1 in the past for another thing.

Glad you got it solved, Freddie.

Now get back to work! :P

BTW, I think any incident such as this which is resolved and discussed on this forum is good for all.  It becomes yet another "answer" to the many questions that float around the forums.

It stinks to go through crashes/BSODs, etc, but in the end it generally proves there really are solutions to most issues.

Go make some (64 bit) music

where I send the bill.. will you be paying USD ? that'll be $64... and GB £32  £50 (as per CW's unique currency exchange calculator)

Fixed it, might as well make a buck or two on the exchange rate. - Sorry my pet peeve surfacing.

I have had weirdness with on board audio in the past.

My solution was to turn it off completely in bios and use another pair of my outs for windows default sound and disable that stereo out pair in sonar-

Problems solved-

I wouldn't advise you buying anything from other US companies then, e.g. mackie if you get annoyed with it.. as their prices reflect such things as well.. so you can't blame them for it. I found it interesting my mackie BK near doubled in price at one point.

Exchange rates change by the minute and there are many different ways banks work out what the daily exchange rate ends up. Some internet calculators make the mistake of grabbing the latest to-the-minute exchange rate. This is not how banks calculate them.

So the calculator on Cakewalks site is either tied to a bank's published exchange rate, or they use the prior day's final rate.

Its the banks that are making the extra bucks on the exchange, not companies like Mackie or Cakewalk.

I'm sorry but this is utter rubbish.

At today's exchange rates, one American Dollar is worth £0.63036

Please explain how it is possible for Amazon UK to sell Sonar X1 @ £299.40, yet Amazon.com sells it for $355.50

No amount of day to day rate fluctuations can account for this MASSIVE discrepancy.

The price we should be paying over here is about £224, a full £71 down on the actual price. The banks aren't making on this transaction - they're not even involved! And I doubt very much it's Amazon levying the fee.

Its not rubbish. Its just not as simple as you think (its quite painful).
http://economics.about.co.cs/money/l/aa022703a.htm
Edit: couldn't cut-and-paste the right link. :/

Worse yet, the banks add a surcharge for the transaction, which depends on which way the money is going (in an effort to make sure the bank is always benefiting from the transaction).

There's also the distinction between how VAT is handled in the UK (and usually stated in the price) and how sales tax is handled in the US (not usually stated in the price). In practice, the difference to the end consumer is often smaller than it appears.

To be more specific, of the Amazon price you quote, £60 is VAT. So the actual difference that's under Cakewalk's control there is at most £11.

Through a UK site that gets the rate from the UK Central Bank, or the American site that gets its rate from the American Central Bank?

is the credit card you are using (or the bank which is holding your account) the entity that will do the exchange?

Does Cakewalk accept the foreign currency, and sells is on the American foreign exchange? Or is this handled by Roland which uses the Foreign Exchange Market of Japan?

I don't expect answers, I'm just trying to make a point that going to xyz.exchange-rates.com to get the FX rate is a fallacy. You have to go with the exchange rate offered by the institution that performs the exchange.

Inter-bank exchanges use the posted rates as well as sales in a Foreign Exchange. But since you and I have to go through one or more middle men to do the exchange, it cost us more in our local currency. Worse, it will be dependent on which entity sells the foreign currency on the market, and how they feel the market will go for that particular currency.

Oh, and don't forget duity and import/export tarrifs... Gah.Were really off topic aren't we?

Oh dear what have I started? I'll be getting called a troll next..............

I'm not going to go on & on about it, although I probably will.... eventually..... but I would like to be able to pay & download in $$ like I can at most other US sites.

When I paid for the 8.5 get X1 free upgrade the invoice I received showed zero in the tax entry so it wasn't the VAT made the difference there. The invoice was for £89 and I see someone in the thread linked to earlier had a ballpark figure of £73 for the exchange rate then. Anyway I'm not going to get started 'cos it never made a difference a year ago and I still pay it anyway.

I'm just tight fisted and want to get it cheaper.......... I do dry and reuse my tea bags after all.

One thing I didn't see here was reverting to the legacy firewire driver.  I have blue screens out of nowhere even when not running sonar (but was using my Presonus Studiolive 16) with the same IRQ message. WindBug pointed to he firewire driver.  Once I reverted it has been completely stable in and out of Sonar XL

Cheers

Grif

Yeah the latest drivers aren't always the most stable. I've gone back a version on my ZED-R16. Not because of stability, but there's a lag of several seconds between pushing play/record and the project starting.

That's gone completely so it's obviously a driver thing. A & H are 'investigating'.
