New 3D Animated Music Video recorded with Sonar X1

Hello all:

I finally finished a new 3D animated music video that I'd like to share with you. I recorded the song with Sonar X1. This is a new "virtual" project -- the band members of "Midnight Meridian" along with their concert venue were put together just for this video.

I am a long-time reader of the forums here. The people here have helped me with my Cakewalk / Sonar issues so many times over the years without them ever knowing it. So thank you to all who are reading this and thanks for watching. I hope you enjoy.

That's one of the better videos I've seen recently.  The song itself is nicely crafted, and very well produced.  Stylistically, it's a throwback to some of the Brit rock groups of the 80's, but with modern touches.  Too bad I don't have any 3D glasses.

    All the best,

    Thanks for the nice words.

Lynn, I realize now how the title of my post looks. The animation is not really in 3D -- like you'd wear glasses for -- it was just made with 3D animation software.

But I think that you pegged the style right on -- I guess my early influences show!

    Best regards,

    Wow.  This is cool.

Like the song and really like the video.  It would be fun to star, per se, in an animated video.

    Hi Bill,

Very cool concept and execution!  Excellent work on both the song and video.

So, you are Meridian, or rather the animator and song creator?  Dude, this is amazing.  I'm in love with the female singer!  Woe is me.  LOL.  Very original and enjoyable project.  The whole project is very proessionally done.

Thank you all for your kind words.

Note to evadianepug: My usual songwriting/recording partner of many years had become too busy with his cover/tribute projects so this was a solo effort for both the song and the video. I do think that it would be sort of funny though to get fan mail addressed to these characters -- like Elisa the female singer whose voice is just as virtual as everything else about her.

I am completely blown away by this. The music alone is outstanding but the animation is simply genius. The two together create one of the very best music videos I have seen not only here but across the net. I have had in the back of my mind for some time using animation for my music videos instead of the standard slide-show. After seeing this, I think I need at least half a dozen re-incarnations before I could ever learn to animate with your exceptional style and quality!

    Hey guys:

Thanks for the compliments. I made the video/animation myself. I was really happy to be able to do the whole production here, inhouse, just to see what could be done. The expense was the 3D animation software --which I already had been using -- and some of the 3D assets. The big problem here wasn't money, it was the time involved. All told, between the song and the video, it took almost a year out of my music-making time to produce. While I am happy with how it all came out, I realize how long an entire Midnight Meridian album would take if all of the songs had videos! I'll have to pick and choose. Or work faster!

My last animated music video along these lines was about four years ago for Dark Franklin's "Odysseys"(also recorded with Sonar) .I do love the video/animation medium but it does take time away from my musical aspirations. I guess that I'll have to find a balance.

    Great Job!!!!

It seems like it must have taken several hundred hours work to pull that off.

The main 3D program I used was Maya -- but just like with Sonar, I used some plug-ins. One plug-in was to connect Maya with PoserPro to import the characters. Another was Vue for the outdoor scenery, although I also ran Vue as a stand-alone program. Once everything was rendered, I adjusted the scenes in After Effects for final assembly in Premiere.

I do enjoy seeing what the software can do. My favorite plug-ins on the Sonar side of things for this song were Electri6ity for the guitar and Vocaloid for the female vocals. Right now I am finishing up on the "video game" version of this song where it is pretty much the same as the video, but rather than just watch, the viewer can walk around the concert hall and watch from whatever angle -- a sort of "interactive" music video.

    Thanks again for the compliments.
