Cloud Storage - anyone using this?

I'm not looking at just backing up (I have Acronis and a process for that).  However, I like the idea of having my files available and share-able anytime from anywhere on any PC/Mobile device for collaboration as well as music charts and audio/video files I use on the road.

A couple I came across are JustCloud.com ($4.95/mo, if 2yr purchase, with unlimited computers and space) and LiveDrive.com ($159.95/yr for 5 PCs and 5TB data). These also create incremental versions of files automatically which is nice.

Of course, there are many companies but wondering if anyone is using something similar and happy with their service?

P.S. not interested in iCloud - iTunes frustrates the h**l out of me!!

Another thought: could acclomplish the same thing from a home server?  I've got another computer (old dual core DAW) I'm thinking about loading up Windows Home Server on to network the house.  Is it possible to set it up securely to access it online as well?

Once you put your stuff on the "cloud" it's no longer under your control. If that company goes belly-up or is busted by the government your stuff is gone forever. Read about the Megaupload bust. Maybe I'm a little paranoid but I feel better having control over my goods. There are ways to make your stuff available over the network from a home NAS device. My 2 cents.

I don't think you are paranoid but have legitimate concerns.  Stability of the company was one of my first thoughts of concern - what happens if . . . ?

I’m also to paranoid to use on-line backup sites, to many what ifs for me. Like what if they have a crash, do they have backups? What if they get infected? What if they get hacked and your stuff gets stolen or scrambled? ETC, ETC!

I bought an USB to HD (sata) adaptor and a couple of internal (raw) HDs. I have verified backups right here. You can get plastic carrying cases for the HD so maybe you could take one with you on the road.

I'm an avid Home Server user.  I don't actually have the 2011 version, the older Server 2003 based version works well anyway.  The remote access is really handy, though the speed will be limited by your internet connection upload bandwidth.  The web interface is slick, and offers RDP connection to any supported computer on your network.  They'll assign you a whatever.homeserver.com domain and automatically track your ISP's IP assigments so that custom domain always works.  The backup is really nice too, it automatically backs up all PC's in the house and can restore any PC complete with operating system using a network boot CD (like re-imaging a drive).

I use mine to keep all my documents, movies, music collection and all PC backups.  It generally staws away from my DAW, since it's network functionality is disabled by default, but I'll use the server to backup projects or samples as needed.  I also setup the server as a remote desktop and configured a sneaky hole through the firewall so I can just get straight to a Windows desktop where all my files are located and basic office software is available from anywhere.  All important files I keep are setup to be redundant on 2 physical drives in the server and backed up to an external drive about once a week.

It is my own private cloud really, except if my whole house explodes I'm still screwed.

Thanks wogg - I think that's what I would like (& need) to do.  I'll recruit some IT friends to cover my bases and give it a go.
