Problem rendering virtual drums in Sonar X1 Expanded - goes out of time
The other day, I did a shootout for a website where I used a number of different drum samplers - Superior, Addictive Drums, BFD, Studio Drummer & Steven Slate Drums 4 - playing alongside the same musical accompaniment. I set each respective sampler up in a different project. When I played the different projects back, everything played in time just as I intended. However, after I had mixed down each project & rendered it as a stereo file, I noticed that the drums were now out of time with the rest of the audio. ...now, I will say at this point that I did find a work-around that was successful - I exported the audio using "audible bounce" instead of "fast bounce"... My question is: why is this occurring? Is there some setting I need to adjust to get it to work like it should? Has anyone else had similar issues? Thanks in advance for your input!

I'm guessing I'm the only one with this problem, then?

playing alongside the same musical accompaniment. Where did the accompaniment come from ? Is it an audio file you imported or dropped into the project ?. How much out of time are we talking ?, does it slowly drift further out of time ?. I'm wondering if there's a sample rate or clock source problem/conflict ?. Hard to say without some more detail. Let us know. Cheers - Cliff

The accompaniment is from other recorded audio & midi tracks - bass, guitar. True Pianos & Dimension Pro. The strange thing is, the True Pianos & Dimension both render/bounce accurately, but all of my 3rd party drum samplers are out. I checked with Session Drummer 3, & it renders accurately. It doesn't go out gradually, its out by quite a bit - more than a 32nd note (@112bpm) but less than a 16th, & consistently delayed. I suspect it may be to do with delay compensation, but I'm not sure - Why does it only do it on my 3rd party synths, & not the ones that come with Sonar?

The symptom does sound like a plugin delay compensation issue. So if the drums are behind (delayed) it sounds like there's no delay compensation happening. I think there's somewhere you can set that per plugin via the plugin manager. Other than that I'm not sure what to suggest, and I can't get to my DAW right now either. Someone else might chime in with something more. Cheers - Cliff

Are the drum samples playing back MIDI data? If so, you may want to try raising your MIDI buffers.

I think your suspicion are right regarding delay compensation. I'm not sure about the others but in BFD2 there is an "offline" button which may help although I think this is more for solving the problem of truncated notes. Steve

How strange, the forum moderator's auto pilot deems the word, "su****ion" to be su****ious. Wow, it deems both spellings of the same word to be dubious Steve

Steve +1 That's what Fxpansion advised me to do to eliminate note truncation, way back when BFD2 was first released. It only ever seemed to happen on cymbals for me, all the other kit pieces rendered perfectly

Are the drum samples playing back MIDI data? If so, you may want to try raising your MIDI buffers. Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately, being a bit thick, don't quite understand the question... I'm not having a problem with any of the samples playing back - they are all there - just delayed. I have a powerful, eight core i7 processor with 16Gb of Ram, & it's nowhere near breaking a sweat... ....Anyhow, I guess it's a bit of a moot point, because I just tried some other projects that I have stored, & I seem to have no problems - they render fine... It just seems to be a bug with that one group of projects - It seems because I transferred the same midi file across all in that group of projects, it has spread the "bug" across them all... weird, but I've had similar strange things happen before in Sonar... ...I just thought maybe the Cakewalk bughunters may want to be aware of it.
