Is there some type of AUDIO gain or boost?
Here's the situation...Recorded a blistering guitar solo (way above my head actually) no mistakes perfect. The recording levels were hot but just below clipping (both in Fast Track Pro and SONAR). When I went to listen to the playback, the volume level of the track was very low. I turned the fader up all the way but it's still low. I've tried lowering all the other faders to match but then the whole output of the song is low with the master turned all the way up. I was just wondering if there was some kind of Trim/Gain or VST that could up the volume without causing distortion or clipping the original. I know there is a gain knob at the top of the channel strip but that does absolutely nothing in my case. I don't really want to chain compress either but... I'm sort of at a loss here. Any help is VERY appreciated.

There is a gain/trim on every audio track. Make sure you set the track Header to show "ALL." It shows "Custom" by default. Once it's set to show ALL drag the track until you see the Gain parameter. EDIT: That Gain knob is the same thing as the gain parameter in the track header. If that does nothing for you, I don't know what to tell you, except, you better get to the bottom of why your recording/s are so low, in the first place. Your audio interface should have an Input control so you can turn up the signal. If you say it looks fine when recording but ends up low when you play it back. You better find out what's causing that.

you can try normalize, but do it w/ a copy. That raises the vol of the entire clip by enough to just keep the loudest bit clipping.

Your description confuses me. Are you saying your channel strip meter is showing a signal just below digital zero? Are you also saying it sounds quiet to you during playback? If this is in fact what you're saying, I suggest you make sure your monitors are set to a proper output level. If that is not what you're saying, I apologize for reading your post wrong.

I agree if the recording levels were as hot as you say I think you have something else going on during playback. That could be you've changed levels in offset mode and now out of offset. - Check that by pressing 'O' - you'll then see '+' beside your volume fader. Check the level of that, then switch out of offset again by pressing 'O' Do you have a compressor active on the track. It's quite possible to lower the overall volume but having a lot of compression going on but no makeup gain, hence low volume. EQ is capable of the same sort of level reduction. That's a few things I'd check. Either that or you weren't recording as hot as you thought. You should be able to tell by the waveforms though. How do they show?

Make sure you don't have the Dim feature on.

Normalize the track..... you can make a clone/copy first to play it safe in case something screws up. Unless the levels are really low, normalize will bring it up to a respectable level and it will sound good.

Bluecat has a freeware gain plugin for mono and stereo tracks, that I've used in extreme cases. I think it's adds up to +60db!

Remember that you have a Gain, track faders, master bus and main outs. All these have gain controls.

Before doing anything I'd try to find out what the situation actually is. If soundcards input level is close to clipping, the actual wave recorded should be strong. You can't set the actual input level with SONARs sliders, at least you couldn't pre X.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.
