Promenade

Finally....I have set up my DAW and half arsed home studio and the first thing I have cranked together is my arrangement of Mussorgsky's "Promenade" from "Pictures at an Exhibition". I heard Trevor Rabins version of this and I have always wanted to do it. To me its probably not finished and plenty of mixin gor mastering still possible, but I thought I'd wack it up for a response.

Have a listen here and let me know. http://www.soundclick.com...ult.cfm?bandID=1233364

Thanks

This is difficult to comment on.  You've got it right, but it's just a segment.  I'm curious to hear how this comes out in the end.

I'm not sure what you mean, that is the whole song, not a segment.

I have to agree with Lynn , its a start . Sounds good what your doing , keep working with it and think in terms of song or music structure and keep it interesting each step of the way and you'll end up with something cool .

Sorry guys, I must not have made myself clear, my song is a piece of music called "promenade", written by Modeste Mussorgsky in 1874 as part of a suite called "Pictures at an Exhibition". It was originally written for piano and I have arranged it for guitar. Basically its a cover so there is not really any "more" or different structure to it.

Sorry if I misunderstood.  I've heard the original, and I must have remembered it being longer.  It's quite cool as is, in fact, ambitious for guitar.

Yea I know this peice ELP, Emerson Lake and Palmer and of course as you have pointed out Mussorgasky, so where is the singing??

Ok so you can play guitar, although I wouldn't say Promenade is a difficult peice to play.

The only problem I had is the guitar tones are a little ugly and do not blend well, it could be the conversion process though when you upload it to SoundClick.

So are we going to hear the rest of Pictures at an Exibition??

    Peace Ben

uummmmm...no. To ambitious by a long shot. Thanks for your feedback Ben.

As far as the guitar tones are concerned, it could be the upload process, it sounds ok here on the DAW. To be honest I sat down at about 11am and the thought entered my head and I sat down and just jumped into it and couldnt let it go until 1am this morning. I could probably spend a stack more time fiddling with guitar tones.

One cool thing I learnt (too late unfortunately and by this stage I wasnt going back to start all over again) was the effect of the layering of guitars all over each other. On this track I have 16 tracks of guitars and there are 141 individually recorded guitar parts. If I did it again (and I dont think I will) I would work out some kind of sophisticated system, probably involving many more tracks, that would more easily enable me to individual adjust levels of each part. I might have have say the second note of each inversion on one track but the level required for each part is different. For example that second note of the inversion needs to be loud to cut through a bit in a more quiet section but needs to drop back a little when its in the middle of an onsluaght of 8 tracks of guitar. At the moment each track is mixed as a bit of a compromise so there are a couple of guitar tracks taht are a little quiet in some sections and too upfront in others. I could/should got through the whole 141 parts and apply volume envelopes but that would be ummm....tedious.

I was thinking an ELP tune..... but I've never heard the original and it makes sense that ELP would do some classical things in their  own unique style.

    So to your tune.

I like the overall sound of the instruments and synths.... the issue I have is a nit. To me there is no soul, no feel in the music. It's all very steady and deliberate sounding.

Play it with feeling and this would be really cool.

    my 2 cents

Thats cool that it sounds like there is synths in there. The whole piece is only guitar ( 16 tracks, 141 recordings) with one bass track. Its my version of Brian Mays "guitar choir". I like the way they interact and give it a synth quality. Actually the fact that this piece is just MANY layers of guitar laid over each other is the key to your other point about it being soulless and without feeling (which I agree with). I think that that comes from the fact that at times there are 12 individual seperately recorded guitars playing in a measure. When I was playing and tracking each guitar part I felt like I had to be particularly exact with my playing and everything had to be ON the beat and clean and end crisp so that everything would line up properly and not wash out into a total mess ( it gets close at times).

I think it's pretty darn cool and very creative. I can hear this as an intro, something like Black Sabbath would do

Sounds like an intro to me too.  Doesn't matter, that's the whole tune.  You did a good job on it, I think.  I've never heard the original.  Not really the genre I listen to for leisure but I think you did a good job.
