Using Audio Snap to determine tempo?

Hello, I'd like to Import a pre-mixed wav file with an unknown tempo and use Audio Snap to determine the tempo and set it the grid. Will A.S. do that? Thanks.

I think once you filter the clip for audio transients it will show the average tempo of the clip in the Audiosnap palette.

Thanks sven, I never used A/S before, but I think it may be useful for the type of work i've been doing - overdubbing vocal tacks onto stereo instrumental backing tracks and sometimes individual stems. I'd like to put the backing tracks on the grid so that time based vocal effects can be based off of the project tempo.

I've tried this a lot. I have many sessions recorded long ago that need proper measure and tempo maps. It just doesn't work very well, especially if you have any pickup notes. A better solution is to tap along to the recording with a midi keyboard and record one midi note tap per quarter note. Then use the fit improvisation command.

This particular track that I'm about to start working on has a 4 count click-in at the very beginning. Could that one measure of click some how be used to set the project tempo?

With a 4 count-click in the beginning, AudioSnap might just work fairly well. Give that a try with the "Set Project From Clip" function.

Thanks Steve, it doesn't seem to be locking on. I'll just set the delays, etc by ear as i've been doing. A tap delay would be nice, i'll have to look into a plugin with one.

I find the free MixMeister BPM analyzer very useful for stuff like that.

Success with Audio Snap is inversely proportional to the complexity of the track you're trying to use it on.  A simple four-on-the-floor kick drum track and you've got it made.  Complex waveforms with not-so-clear transients and you'll struggle.

One thing I will do to try to determine a BPM in an audio track is simply use the metronome.

You must line up the dominate first beat with the 1 beat in the metronome.  then use a trial and error method to find the beat.

Assuming it is steady all the way through and it was recorded ON a beat (79 BPM as opposed to 76.48 bpm) you should be able to find that bpm in short order.

If it's lined up at the first measure....simply skip ahead by 10 measures at a time, and when you have found  the right/correct bpm..... it will still be "locked" to the metronome all the way through.
