Using Abbey Road Drums (Kontakt) with Sonar X1
I'm a newbee at this, and stumped. I want to take some already recorded drums in Abbey Road Drums (Kontakt player version 5) and output them in separate midi tracks in Sonar X1 Producer. I can set things up so there are many midi tracks, each being fed by Kontakt. The level meters bounce but when I hit record nothing actually records. I can't record (the prerecorded drums) the midi, or in any way capture the drum sounds... unless I switch to an audio track. But that's not what I want. I want the midi. Maybe it just can't be done? I'm not experienced enough in this to know one way or another. I am just guessing it can. I found the Kontakt version 4 manual, but there have been some changes in 5 and I just can't get things working despite trying to read the details in version 4. So right now, what I have to do, is record to audio, then bring it into Sonar X1. Not happy with that at all. Note that I can record midi drums from Abbey Road Drums using a keyboard. It flows nicely into Sonar X1. But the prerecorded drum sequences, nada. Anyone with experience in this? Rick

it's not clear if you want to record the drums' audio output or the midi patterns used to trigger the drums?

Are you familiar with using soft synths in general? Have you done the tutorial (#4 or #6 or..) about using soft synth? Your problem description leaves me confused. I'm not familiar with ARD, but I assume it works like KONTAKT normally functioons and other soft synths and drum software. You record or drag the MIDI beats on the MIDI track, and route the MIDI to play KONTAKT. To convert to audio you bounce or freeze.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Hi Flameout, Are you trying to bring a groove from the Abbey Road Drummer series into a MIDI track in Soar? If so, you need to load the groove in K5 and then click on the little icon next to the groove name that looks like four arrows and drag to a MIDI track:
Intel Core i7; 32GB RAM; Win10 Pro x64;RME HDSPe MADI FX; Orion 32 and Lynx Aurora 16; Mics and other stuff...

I figured out that part myself. There is a tutorial at NI for using Sonar and Kontact. It sucks, but it's there. No where can I find correct information on getting the abbey road drums into seperate tracks in X1. I have created destination tracks in X1 and I've created the multiple outs in Kontact but that's as far as I can get. Komplete 8 seems to be a komplete riddle if you aren't willing to devote your life to it. I have put in some hours and made almost no progress. Is there some good info out there for integration of Kontact with X!? I've spent hours and found nothing valuable.
Regards, John I want to make it clear that I am an Eedjit. I have no direct, or indirect, knowledge of business, the music industry, forum threads or the meaning of life. I know about amps. WIN 10 Pro X64, I7-3770k 16 gigs, ASUS Z77 pro, AMD 7950 3 gig, Steinberg UR44, A-Pro 500, Sonar Platinum, KRK Rokit 6

It's not about Kontakt, Komplete and Sonar-It;s about softsynths. For the most part they are all the same-kind of. Anyway-Here is one way to get individual outs in Kontakt. Follow it word for word. It works-I have used this in K4 and K5. I found this, I did not create it: From the synth rack, I insert an instance of Kontakt (not the 16out, just the one that says Kontakt). From the insert synth properties page under create these tracks I select "MIDI source", "synth track folder" and "All Synth Audio Outputs: Stereo" and click ok. It then creates a track folder with 16 stereo outs from kontakt and a midi track. Then from the Kontakt window I select whichever drum multi I want from ssd in the library. The kit loads with all the sounds being routed to just the first or main stereo output. Then from the "Outputs" mixer section in Kontakt, I click on the "conf." under the second track (usually for the snare). Then under the channel output configuration window I click on the physical out for channel 01 and select the 3rd option from the drop down. For me it reads "KT aux 1[1]". The physical out should now say "plugin out #3". Then I click on the physical out for channel 02 and select the fourth option (this reads "KT aux 1[2]"). So now channel 2 reads "plugin out #4". Click ok to apply the changes. Then click on the button towards the top of the "outputs" mixer view in kontakt that says "Reset Out Map." This will change all the output of all channels to follow sequentially. So now each channel strip will be routed to a separate track in the kontakt folder in sonar. Then all you have to do is delete the unused channels in the track folder. For me with the steven slate drums, this is usually the last four tracks. Let me know if this makes any difference in your routing.

Razor, nevermind....you're right. I found it. I had to click on "settings" while in the mixing console...and then I could route each individual to my tracks. It works like a charm...sheesh...thanks for helping me solve this riddle! :) I so hate that Kontakt player...so many options...so confusing! -Danny

Hi Danny, Glad to see it's working for you, particularly since I think the A.R./Studio drummer products are quite good....even though that outputs section really is a **** to find. They're actually one of my current favorites (right up there with Superior Drummer) for times when I don't/can't have the real thing. Good luck and happy to have helped. Dean

Hi Dean, yeah me too....you can't imagine how long I've messed with this particular sample package. You pointing this out has been a major hurdle for me along side of a trigger issue that I've been having with only that sample pack. I couldn't get the snare to trigger right at note D1. No matter what I tried, it just passed right on by my notes there which would just be center hits on my V Drums kit. This bothered me for the longest time. I've never had good results with NI tech support so I did my best to stay away from them. I finally gave up because I just couldn't figure it out. So I mailed support and actually got a really good dude named Patrick. We found out that my Roland brain is sending CC16's all over the place...which is wreaking havoc in that sample pack. So doing away with CC16 using Sonar's midi filter plug helped on stuff that was already tracked. Then to totally fix it, I went into my Roland brain and just disabled CC16 as it doesn't seem to be doing anything. I'm not even sure what it is...but disabling it didn't mess with any of my midi's and playing the kit in real time is perfect too. Between this issue and the output thing, I was pulling my hair out...and well, I need my hair. LOL! So anyway, yeah what you've offered here has been most helpful. I really appreciate it...I owe ya one man. :) -Danny

2 ways to ease the pains of multi-out kontact drums. 1. When you insert synth, choose 16 out and check the all synth audio outputs: Stereo (or mono if prefered), then under the MIXER tab in kontact assign each drum/Mic to separate outs. They should already be created in Sonar if you chose All synth audio outputs. 2. IF you loaded the Stereo Kontact to start with (to keep your load lighter), Don't Sweat, Just click OUTPUTS (in Kontact), then click ADD CHANNELS, Quantity: 8 number of channels: 2 (for 8 stereo trcks, 16/1 for 16 mono) Soundcard/Host output: Kt St 1, CHECK the box 'ascending output assignment'. CHECK the box 'Delete existing Channels before creating new ones'. MIXER TAB: notice St 1 is still the only available channel out... NO Problem, Just hit the EXCLAMATION BOX (left of the Cpu/disk meter in Kt) Now ALL 8 stereo outs (or 16 mono, depending on your choices) appear in the MIXER tab of Kt. Now assign kick, snare, hats, toms (i like to subgroup sometimes), St OH, ST Room, Mono OH, Mono Room, Perc, etc... to separate outs. Go to SONAR and insert the appropriate number of audio tracks in Your synth folder (Modern Drummer) and assign there INPUTS to be the separate outs from Kontakt. They show up as inputs in Sonar now. Then you can hit freeze and they'll all get separated and bounced to individual frozen wav files for further special treatment.

Been messing around with this myself, bought both Studio Drummer and Abbey Road 60's Drummer lately. But apart from the close mics which can be assigned to separate outputs you also have three other kit mic channels, for 60's Drummer there is Overhead Stereo, Overhead Mono and Room mics. These can't be assigned to separate outputs for separate drums like in for example Session Drummer where it's not an option. I'm mighty impressed by both the sound and flexibility of Kontakt drums.

I was the someone else that Dean had helped figure this routing stuff out a few weeks ago. Astonishing the number of people that have trouble output routing Kontakt and STILL they don't improve it. Abbey Road Drums are very nice though. Only reason to even bother with the pain. Ken
