Volume Suddenly Too Low

All of a sudden my volume is too low on everything. Didn't make any changes or updates. Don't know what happened. All of my tracks are playing back at a very low volume, both midi and audio. When I get out of Cakewalk and play old store-bought pre-recorded MP3s in MediaPlayer, those play back loud and normal. So this is a Cakewalk only problem. Even when I hit keys on my keyboard, everything is too low even with volume on mixer and keyboard all the way up. It's doing this on all my songs that I play back, which used to playback at a normal volume. Is there some setting in Cakewalk that can fix this? My set up is: MSI A6000 Dual Core Pentium T4500 @ 2.30 GHz 2.30 GHz, 3.00 GB memory, 32 bit system. Roland XP keyboard, Cakewalk Home Studio 7 External Tascam US-144 Soundcard, Behringer Eurorack MX 1804 analog mixer, Behringer Truth powered Monitors:

The following is my advice on a previous similar problem. Proved not to be the issue then, but is a good place to check off first before looking elsewhere for the problem. "Hi Rombros - Just a thought, but have you looked at the Windows Audio settings? I have had similar problems to you in the past and found my solution there. I work in XP so don't know where the settings are for you in Windows 7. In XP, I open Control Panel and then Sounds and Audio Devices. I then click on 'Advanced' on the Device Volume tag. There should be four sliders on the mixer that opens - Volume Control, Wave, SW Synth and CD Player. What may be happening is that the Volume Control slider is set OK and therefore the Sound system works fine outside Sonar. But if the Wave and SW Synth sliders are set very low or at zero, you will hear nothing in Sonar as SW Synth controls Midi volume while Wave controls .wav volume. For some odd reason, these sliders have a habit of resetting themselves to zero for no reason at all!"

Unfortunately, Microsoft decided to make this process more complicated in Windows 7 (and Vista). However, volume levels are up everywhere. Don't know what the problem is.

There is one other possibility it might be worth checking before the real experts in this Forum take over from me. Open a project in HS and then from the top Menu open Options / Project. Have a look at the "Midi Out" tab. There should be two boxes on the tab - the top one says "Zero controllers when play stops". Is the box ticked for this option? If it is, this would at least in part account for the sudden lowering of playback volume. Untick the box, click OK and then reload the soft synths and you will have your volume back.

Hi Clifford - Hope the suggestions sort out the problem for you. It was several years ago that I had the same problem and it drove me nuts too! I seem to recall it was Beagle here on this Forum who pinpointed the problem for me. So I just try to repay his help by passing on his advice for which I remain eternally grateful!

Thanks for responding. Most of my tracks don't have soft synths. I'm still a keyboard user, except for a very few tracks. However, as suggested, I went in and made suggested changes, but the volume remains low on all my tracks. Don't know what the problem is. Need help.

Hi Ojay - I suspect this problem is going to need a far greater technical expertise on HS than I have so perhaps you might need to raise it with the Technical Support people. I don't use a keyboard within Sonar as I write all my music by notation using soft synths. What I found is that if I did not uncheck the "Zero Controllers when play stops" box before I started composing within a new project, the mod wheel of each soft synth would be set to zero after the first play. I am just wondering if something similar has happened to the link between your keyboard and Sonar. Or perhaps even the mixer. If you want to pursue this problem further here, would it be possible to post some screen shots of one of your projects? Just so we could see the tracks and the settings for each track? And perhaps some detail about how the mixer and keyboard are linked into Sonar?

So are they MIDI tracks playing back through your keyboard (or the Microsoft GS Wavetable synth in your computer sound card), or audio tracks?

I am selling my MIM Fender Stratocaster HSS, red and black. PM for more details.

What happens if you drag a pre recorded Wav or mp3 in and play it in sonar ? Is it still low ?

Strange as it may sound have you checked the monitor output faders are not pulled down ? (Not the master fader ) In my case this would read VS-700 Norrie

That's what I was thinking. That output may not be visible by default.

Just as mysteriously as this problem presented itself, it has self-corrected and disappeared. I don't know what to say. Don't have a clue what caused and un-caused it.

I'm wondering if you unwittingly toggled to Offset Mode by pressing "O" on the keyboard.

My advice is first that connect  every point properly in your music system.then start to play music and Liston.after that you do not face any problem from that.

Re:Volume Suddenly Too Low 2012/04/16 02:05:10 (permalink)
It took a while but Cakewalk responded. They seem to think it's all being caused by an ongoing latency problem. At every start up, the problem continues until I keep switching between ASIO or WDM driver mode. But no matter which I start up with, I always have the stuck note, drop-out quirks and problems. I usually have to go through a series of re-starting computer and switching driver modes before it finally acts right. Really annoying and a huge waste of time.
