For Your Country - A little ballad for the men and women who protect us.

This just kind of evolved from watching a few shows about how those coming home get treated sometimes and a few other things. My 13 year old granddaugther Lizzie started taking violin lessons at school and my 8 year old grandson Adam started taking recorder and learned 3 notes so I fit her into the choruses and him into the bridge with the 3 notes he learned. We all got a kick out of it.
With friend Sara Espinosa doing the main vocals and brother Rick on bass and backing vocals.

I'm open to suggestions. This is the first full mix so it will probably need a little tweaking here and there.

Thanks,

Joe..

You did a very nice job for your first full mix.  The song is melodic and catchy, while still conveying the emotional message of the song.  The singer's voice is very nice, and you captured it well.  How nice that you were able to get your family involved.  This is a nice tribute to our men and women in the service.

Thanks to all for the comments. I'm going to make a little video out of it as soon as I am comfortable with the mix.

The same link has an updated version. I tried to give the vocals and acoustic guitar a little more space, smooth a few things out a little and fix what I felt were a couple of panning and eq issues.

As everyone knows one little tweak is like pulling the bottom box off a shelf and all the others cave in. Plus morning ears versus later in the day and so many other variables. It's good thing I keep versions as I go or it would be shot.

    Thanks again to all.

A great song with powerful lyrics and wonderfully sung and orchestrated (loved the kids input). My only very small suggestion is that it might be worth revisiting the drums - that constant 'hit' beat that starts around 0:36 (sorry, but that is the best way I can think of describing it) can be a bit distracting from the song.

Really like this, melodic and sung well. The intro really captivated me and held my attention, although I was a small bit dissapointed when the guitar came in (more so the strum), cos it turned into a different more country type genre.

    Well done

Thanks for the comments guys. Well taken.

The drums are loops (Drums on demand) and they are not the individual track samples so other then eq'ing the daylight out of them I sometimes compromise to get teh beat I'm looking for.

I need a real drummer, or to become more proficient in ESD or BFD. I have both but need to spend some time with them. Perhaps in the meantime I might be able to back that rim shot down a bit or even consider a different sample.

Thanks for listen and the suggestions!

I don't know why the anonomyous clown put down your song.  I guess I would want to be anonomyous too with that kind of attitude.

This is a good song and it is very well done.  I like it and the performance.

    Nice work.

Your choice of synth sound works very well.  Also, the doubling vocals and harmonies were good.

    Hi, Joe,

Very cool song with a great message and excellent performances by everyone involved!

I'm on my second listen.  Excellent songwriting, all of the instruments sound very good, and the vocals and harmonies are absolutely stellar.  I love the acoustic guitar solo around the three minute mark, and you have a clean and wide, pro sounding mix.  It's also really great that you got your grandkids involved in a nice family music project.

Fantastic job and a great tribute to the people who serve our country.  Have a great day, Joe!

Well done.  I didin't like the clicky stick drum - it started to drive me crazy after a while.  Otherwise, the only other thing was a little more bass frequency.  I know country ain't disco, but a little more weight down there wouldn't hurt and help balance the bright guitar, pipes and voices.  Other than those small things, most excellent.

    Thanks for the comments again.

Funny thing is playing it in the car I thought it had a pube too much bass so last night I tweaked the bass down a smidgen. Perhaps that was a bad move :). I listened to it today and the car and would agree the bass went a little below where it needs to be.

I really need to either get a drummer or more proficient. Sometimes I listen to the drum track and like and other times it is a little much. So I'm in agreements on both calls.

    thanks again,

    Joe,

I just listened on this little compute speakers - tho that is nearer the norm these days than anything w/ bass.  Maybe that is the reason - not your mix.  I'm always amazed at how different mixes sound on different systems - esp. bad ones.  My mains are good - but learning how they translate to boom boxes, bookshelves and any other b words I can think of is a task.

Thanks again and I think you were right about the bass. I spent some time with it today and made a few adjustments and where it is at now I am very happy with. I also did some work on the drum track to smooth out the rimshot and a few of the biting parts and think it really came together. But then again, perhaps I am tainted.

    A one chord hillbillie song?

Does anyone remember a single word that Edward Everett spoke at Gettysburg in 1863? The simple messages keep the meaning coherent. As an honorably discharged, decorated veteran I want to thank you for your kind and thoughtful song.  This is so much more relevant and real than most of the 'tribute' songs that I have heard.  Even more, thanks to your family for recording it for us to listen to.
