De-essing

I am stumped.  I have Fish Fillets, Spit Fish, but it isn't doing the job.  I think that maybe it is a 32-bit plug in and I am running in 64-bit.

Regardless, I need either a de-esser or some help de-essing.

Are there any good (free) de-essers out there or what is the best way of going about de-essing with the plugins that come with X1.

Thanks in advance.

FYI it is a male vocal with incredibly sharp s's.

proper mic technique to mitigate this to begin with......a pop filter..... after the fact.... the plug in.

If the plug in isn't working properly, you need to record again keeping on mind the first line above.

I use gain clip automation and manually decrease the sibilant phrases. Takes more time but I think it's worth the effort.

Bad news for me, Waves doesn't support 64-bit yet and all the songs on this cd are in 64-bit.  They said that they will have 64 bit out in the weeks ahead.
    Still looking for a solution.

+1  Stay away from WAVES!!!  There are no Beta-64 bit drivers on the horizon either.  That should tell you that Waves is swiftly doomed for extinction.  Also, Jbridge antics with Waves is hazardess to my health, in my 64-bit world.  CW tech support will state the same issues with 'Waves in the 64-bit paradigm'.

(The biggest problem with 32-bit Sonar is I become quickly limited on synths and VSTs ... and become less able to exploit powerhouse libraries, like the EWQL libraries and the Slate fg-x Limiter)

    Consider:

Voxformer 64 ... I've de-essed hundreds of tracks with this ... and it has yielded 95% excellence for me.  It also is a powerful vox comp for many of us.

So has the UAD2 Precision De-esser ... of course UAD-2 does not port out for laptops ... you'd need a UAD pci-e duo or quad card.

Zoom in and use volume automation to soften each of them.

waves works great for me in win xp.

i suppose if i used a lot of synths, it'd matter..
but about 80% of all my tracks, are miced or analog input.
only my drum tracks in Superior are synth.

waves really dropped the ball with the 64 bit support issue....

Volume automation, if you have the patience, can yield far better results than any automated compression.

That said, the Sonitus Multiband makes a fine de-esser, too. Also, if you're going to use V-Vocal or Melodyne for pitch correction, those tools also work great for destructive de-essing. These days, on the rare occasions when I wimp out and apply a de-esser, it'll be FabFilter Pro-C.

And if I have an especially bad case of sibilance, I like to go old school: clone the track, compress it heavily and boost the high frequencies, then use that to drive the sidechain input on a compressor across the vocal bus. I have salvaged otherwise useless tracks using this method.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
