Auto panning?

I've used the auto write function button to do manual panning. Is there a better way to do it? I have a two measure phase where I want it to start 100% left and go 100% right and back again.... like a "V" shape. I need to practice a lot if I'm to ever get it done the manual way.

Create a pan envelope in your track view.
Insert three nodes at the desired locations. They can be moved easily if they are not quite right.
You can click on the envelope line between the nodes to select a fast curve, slow curve, or linear if you want.
Panning like that is most effective if you are working with a mono track.

This is a sound effect from the midi files. It's stereo but I'll try it. I've been wondering what envelopes do anyway!

I think you'll like what you can do with envelopes.
Not only volume and panning, but many synth controls can be manipulated with envelopes.
When you write automation, you are creating an envelope. It's just a different way to do it.

Depending on how the stereo image sits, panning may have a somewhat subdued effect. It may tend to simply fade, rather than suggest motion.
If that happens, bounce the synth output to a mono track, and try it again.

I actually stopped using the "write automation" where you enable the "W" and then move the faders in real time.

I started using "insert envelope" and editing it manually.  I found that when I did it the "W" way, I still had to go back and do a ton of manual editing to get it right.... or shall we say...exact.  And in the end the envelope was filled with useless nodes.

So by entering it manually, and then adding nodes only where I need them, I can get the envelope to do exactly what I need and it's cleaner.  Zooming in on a point in the song.....I can place the nodes close together to edit some fast & drastic envelope moves..... such as removing a click or a pop like a fret noise or string squeak and it works perfectly.

As Robert points out.... envelopes are versatile. Not only can you do the normal volume and panning control, but as you learn about them, so many of the synth and FX characteristics can be controlled using envelopes linked to a specific parameter in the synth or the FX.  Really handy stuff to know.

Thanks guys. I got everything to work, now I need to find out how to insert a node. No need to respond to that...I just didn't have time to mess with it much. Now that I know where to find and insert a envelope, I should be able to fiqure it out. As always thanks a lot!

in the envelope mode... simply click on the envelope and a node is added.

In MC4, IIRC a right click was required but not in the newer DAWs.
