home studio 2002 help
i've had a copy of home studio 2002 sitting around for a while, but have never been able to get it to work. i've installed it on three seperate computers, and they all present the same problems: 1. they tell me there's no midi output, which is probably not a big deal, since i'm more interested in plain old audio than midi at present 2. there seems to be an input problem, since the record button is gray, pressing "r" does nothing, and arm button is also gray and non-functional i'm guessing the problem is with the soundcard, as the one i have now is just the factory default (SigmaTel Audio?), but i really have no clue, since i'm a novice at this, and the manual just refers me to the online faq, which doesn't seem to address this problem. to prove how much of a novice i am: it says to plug a microphone into my computer's sound card.. i'm on a laptop, and all i've got at present is a microphone jack next to a headphone jack. is that going to achieve the same effect, or is that no good? and would i be able to use USB inputs as well, even though that's not plugged "into the sound card" as the manual repeats so many times? i'd like to get some decent equipment for my computer, but not until i'm sure this software is actually going to work..

1) MIDI Output - Go to Options-Audio-Advance-Driver Mode. Set to MME (32-bit) then restart Home Studio. Then check Options-MIDI Devices. Do you have any listed (besides MIDI Mapper which is not valid)? 2) Audio I/O - You probably don't have an audio device defined. Go to Options-Audio-Drivers. What do you have listed and selected for Input and Output drivers? Go to Options-Audio-General. What do you have selected as your Record and Playback devices? 3) Yes, you could plug a computer microphone into the microphone jack and get something. The quality won't be very good.

actually, when i select SigmaTel Audio as my driver (it's the only option i've got), it tells me "The following driver(s) either do not support the current audio format or are in use by another application"..

Are you in MME mode? Download the latest drivers for your operating system from SigmaTel.

no can do.. sigmatel doesn't have drivers available at their website.. apparently they don't make the actual soundcards, and i would need to contact the company that put my laptop together to find out what company made it in order to get new drivers.. so methinks i am screwed, as far as this computer goes, since it's a laptop and i can't replace the soundcard (unless i get an external one, but i ultimately want to just be using a USB preamp).. also: the disk says windows 98/me/2000.. does that mean it's incompatible with xp? cos that's what i'm running it on.

Hi Dot, Did you ever resolve anything about your problem with SigmaTel? I just bought Home Studio 2, and I have the exact same problem. I tried the same thing you did: did a search for the driver, and found the same message at SigmaTel's website that you saw, saying they don't do driver support. A further note, for any who are interested: the first thing I tried after installing Home Studio, was to load up one of the sample music files, and see if it would play. I tried the file called "Let It Ride" which has both audio and midi. I got nothing out of midi or audio. Very discouraging! I had already verified my new midi cable works with Media Player. Later, I tried opening another Home Studio file which has midi tracks only, and it played to the midi output. So it appears that when there is an audio track in the project, and my audio isn't working, Home Studio suppresses the the midi output as well, and doesn't tell me it's doing that! Also, in one of these combined midi/audio files, the audio is supposed to play on longer than the midi part. But when the pointer hits the end of the last midi track, play stops. So clearly Home Studio recognizes it can't play the audio portion. But again, it's frustrating that it isn't giving any warning messages explaining what's going on, aside from the 1 message I get at program start-up. I will have to see if the Calkwalk people have any plans to address this problem. Audio drivers are fairly standard. It doesn't make sense for Cakewalk to be incompatible with sound cards that work fine with Windows Media Player. Any comments or assistance will be appreciated!

Follow-up! As stated before, the first thing I did when coming to this message board, was do a search on "Sigma Tel", and this was the only thread I got. I sent an email about the problem to Cakewalk support, and they sent this reply, which - thankfully - fixed the problem: Try this: Go to Options | Audio | Advanced and put a check where it says Always use MME Interface (or change the Driver Mode to MME). Close the program and re-open it. The Wave Profiler should run tests. If not, find and delete the files AUD.INI and TTSSEQ.INI from the Cakewalk program folder. You should now have more devices listed under MIDI Devices and Audio Drivers. Go to Insert | Audio Track. In the audio track, right-click in the FX field. Choose DXI | VSC. Now set the Output and Channel of each of your MIDI tracks to the VSC. There are some good tutorials here for using DXI's: http://www.musicated.com/cakewalk/cakewalk.htm -end of email- Hopefully this post will help anyone else experiencing this problem. I wish the documentation had this on page 1 !

Hello. I'm new to this forum and I see nothing that tells me how to post a message. I'd really like to know how. I also have a problem. The system that I'm using has a SoundBlaster Live Value sound card. I'm trying to record a composition from my Keyboard (VFX-SD) to HS 2002. When I play it back (playback), I get noise along with the music. A salesperson at Radio Shack told me that the noise that i'm getting is the inside of my computer (or Tower). Can anyone tell me how to fix this so that the computer noise does not record when I'm recording? I'm new to computers so I don't understand all of the lingo. If you have an answer for me, can you give it to me in a step by step manner? By this i mean, for example, - "1. Click Start then settings, then control panel.... 2. right click on..." . Also, it is determined that the noise is not coming from my Keyboard. Please email me at: mysticdream21st@yahoo.com Thank you very much! mysticdream21st
