Web Design Software
I've used Front Page 2003 for years and it's a complete dinosaur at this point. I own an entertainment company / live bands, etc. and wanted to know what everyone else here is using. Dreamweaver is out of the question........I'm checking out wix, website tonight, webs, wordpress, etc. I don't want to depend on a web designer. Thanks

Microsoft's replacement for Front Page, Expression Web is a big improvement over Front Page. Front Page was liked by amateurs but loathed by Pros since it created very funky code that was a nightmare for anyone not using Front Page to edit. Expression Web is more along the lines of Dreamweaver and has a great testing environment. It costs about $149

Just throwing this out here, have you ever considered using Wordpress.org with your hosting server or Wordpress.com (limited free version with upgrade options)? I feel personal websites are a bit passe these days & Wordpress easily integrates with the popular social & blog type websites. It's not for creating a flash type/ eye candy website but frankly I think most people are over those now anyway.

Carl, The OP said he owned an Entertainment company. This is not a personal website he's after. It's a business.

Exactly my point, many businesses are using more Wordpress & other blog type websites now since they are easily integrated with social media & advertising. It would depend on his needs.

I have a personal website but I also sell cd's & mp3's so I could consider it a business website too.

Wordpress sounds like a great option.....it's critical to link to twitter, facebook, etc. The guys in Miami Sound Machine & Jon Secada have a very nice wordpress site....they are calling themselves The Sound Machine.....I was amazed at how good wordpress is, and apparently it's free!

Wordpress is excellent. All our company websites run it. It's free, has a great user support community, has plugins for just about anything you'd want to do.

The tricky thing about recommending Wordpress or any other Content Management System is that it still does not provide solutions for customization. Wordcpress is great, but the better Wordpress sites are highly customized both graphically and technically. If he simply wants to grab a template (and there is nothing wrong with that) and throw in his info, simply recommending Wordpress is a great solution. If he wants that site to have a custom look and feel, he will have to use something in addition to Wordpress to edit the necessary code.

This interests me as I also want to setup a website for an upcoming internet company, but really don't have any knowledge in doing this. My options are to either to hire someone or give it a shot on my own. Any tips you can suggest (for a newbee)?

One of the best and worst things about web design is it is very easy to learn by copying the work of others. There are lots of open source formats freely available with lots of support Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal are all well supported by large communities that range from hobbyists to the white house. You can start off by using any of countless free templates and customize them or even start from scratch as you progress in learning. Expensive software is not necessary. I recommended Expression web simply because the OP had mentioned Frojnt Page and i was trying to point him towards something alone the same lines but better. I would start by checking out the home sites for the three Content Management Systems I listed and seeing demo sites of each. Look in their forums and you will get a feel. It would not heart to learn a little HTML too. check out http://www.w3schools.com/ to get an idea on the basics of web coding from basics to advanced. if you decide it's too much work for you, just buy a template or hire a designer.

dub: I'm going to try an locate a demo of Expression Web.........the problem with Front Page is that the majority of FP sites are a dead giveaway that it's a FP site....outdated templates........on my current site, I designed it myself and did not use an existing template......but I need the youtube, facebook widgets and really need to get into the "now so to speak

neallbeck..all well and good about dreamweaver but "Dreamweaver is out of the question" seems to be a direct request not to recommend dreamweaver.
