RAM upgrade
I am considering adding additional RAM to the 6 GB (3 x 2GB - Triple channel) I currently have (specs in signature). There are three free slots so I have the option to add 3x2GB or 3x4GB. Windows Vista Home Premium x64 can only address 16GB. My question is: If I install 18 GB will vista simply ignore the extra memory or will it cause problems.

From my limited understanding of it, it will simply ignore the extra. It's like putting more than 4gB in an XP32 system.

Hi Glyn, To avoid potential RAM incompatibilies, I'd install three additional matching sticks of RAM. That'll yield 12GB. Unless you're making extreme use of soft-synths, that should be more than sufficient.

with the i7 920 not all kind of ram will work well...I had 1600 mhz ram and I had to downgrade to 1033 mhz because of compatibility issues with that processor..My system used to crash often but not anymore...I called Intel for that matter and they help me out with the info. I hope my info helps.

Best to look at your computer manual and get the correct memory in the configuration they say to get it in.

If I can't match the RAM exactly would I be better just going with three 4GB sticks?

while the X58 is a little more forgiving than Sandy or Sandy e it is best to have the same ram. lets say you match the speed (1600) and the CL (9-9-9-24) and voltage (1.65v) there is still a lot of info on the Eeprom that may not match how its tatoe'ed, the sub timings, the XMP profiles and more. while not too big a deal if you know how to manually set timings its can be a major issue if auto-detecting default or XMP. save yourself the hassle considering how cheap ram is now..

Totally agree with Scott here. Glyn I just run the Crucial system scanner. http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/ For an end user rather than a builder it's the bomb because they have to warranty whatever comes up as being suitable for your set-up, for life. I just got an 8Gb Dual Channel upgrade from them for £35 and my box runs sweeter now than it ever did. I had another 4 gig of Corsair (XMS) that came with the machine but for the extra ram it provided over the performance and stability improvement I got without it I've ditched it since. What I'm saying is that 8Gb of proper matched stuff is worth more to me than the 12Gb of assorted headaches. I'll probably leave it that way now until; A/ I hit a wall where I find I need more or B/ the 8Gb chips are not still exponentially more expensive.
