Any MOTU Ultralite users out there ... help!
I'm using Sonar X1, and monitoring using Yamaha HS80 monitors. Problem is, that even with the volume of the speakers almost zero, with the Ultralite monitor level at highest (0db), its so so LOUD. I understood I should have the Ultralite set at maximum, but perhaps this is wrong? Can anyone else using the Ultralite advise me settings I should use? Thanks

Thanks for the reply - can you advise what you mean by " convertors a 0db"?

Keeping the MOTU Ultralite 's main output at 0dB while using the powered monitors volume controller to control the sound level is a good idea. If the sound is crisp and clear, you have no worries, just set the powered monitors to a comfortable level. If their loud and distorted, then you have gain stage issues. Also, does your monitors have a -10 +4 switch?

While agreeing with the above posters about level. If you are in a situation that you need to control the level, I'd sudgest opening up CueMix Software (Should have come with your Motu Ultralite), going to the OUTPUTS tab, and under the output you have hooked up to your monitor speakers, click the MONITOR toggle. Then you should be able to adjust the monitor level with the Monitor Level on the Right. You can also enable the monitor going through the Front Panel on the ultralite itself. Push the channel nob until the O: section you need is selected, the turn the chan nob until the channel you need is selected. In my case it's Master so it's easy. Then you turn the page nob until you see Monitor Off , and turn the Value nob until it says ON. Then you can push the volume knob and set the level of the Output channel. (It's much easier in CueMix)

I've never been able to understand this Ultralite ;-) The monitor button is on, and I can adjust the monitor level with the button on the right. I have it at about 20% and also the speakers are set to only 20%, and the volume I get is comfortable. The output peaks though only at -36 db ---- can that be right? I don't seem to be able to adjust the volume from any other place. In the "Mixes" tab, everything is muted, except for the output that is set as Main Outs, and changing the level here does not affect the monitored volume at all. In answer to CJay, I don't think the monitors have that switch. They have a room control switch 0, -2 and -4 db ... its set to -2.

I am an Ultralite user and use the Cuemix Monitoring knob (upper right) to adjust volume to my main speakers. Activate the monitor button on the outposts tab. My outputs go to Bus 1, which intern goes to main outs.

Well, I have the ultralite and have previously worked with the 828 as well. Set your monitors to whatever and set the volume to desired level with the volume button on the front panel or from the QueMix, as you already know. This is fine to do. You will achieve comfortable listening and that's what you're after. The MOTU's are seriously loud on max levels and if you're not using a volume controler between your MOTU and speakers - like a mixer desk or the Mackie Big Knob - then use the MOTU's volume. It's designed for adjusting levels. Mine is almost permanently set at -28db. Leaving your converters at 0db is simple: Don't lover any other levels in the Que Mix for the different chanels and do not use the Master bus or Main out controls within Sonar to lover your playback levels. This will affect the quality of the sound. The main volume control in the MOTU is just a simple volume control, you can use this to set your levels without problems anywhere and you can work comfortably and safely.

Thanks for that - I think all is OK now that I understand such low settings are OK. Mine is also now set at -28db, with the monitors at about 20%, and that gives a comfortable volume.

That sounds pretty good to me;) You may even lower the volume more on the MOTU and boost your monitors a little more if neccesary. Check with the documentation for your speakers to see if there's a recomended volume setting on them and set them to that. Whatever level you set the main volume of the MOTU to it won't affect the finished render when everything else is set to 0db Either way, I'm glad you found a comfortable volume seting. I hope you get a lot done now and enjoy the experience! Good luck!

I have a ultra lite turn your speaker amps up all the way and use the main volume switch to turn the volume up and down. My volume for mixing is normally -33db and headphones -10db. The amps should always be at unity otherwise the speakers don't get enough power to run properly. Peace Ben
