Concrete Limiter Issue? (SOLVED)

Is anyone else finding the concrete limiter really effecting the sound of their mixes? I'm using 1.0.1 and its hard to get any decent volume out of it with it seriously mudding and affecting the mix. Its not X1d specif happened before, only decided to post about it now. I'm having to use boost 11 in FX bin on master, Boost 11 is sounding better than CL at the moment! Something not right with it IMO.

What settings are you using? I always use the auto-release and no bass boost. I've found the Concrete Limiter to always sound better than Boost 11 when doing large amounts of limiting. Can you post sound examples of what you're getting?

    Hi Rasure,

Any chance your ProChannel strip is set to Pre FX Bin and not Post FX Bin?

Thanks for the replies :-) Its post fx bin, auto release and bass boost off. I might start a fresh project and try again as I'm working on older x1 project so something might be interfering with it, it was fine until the 1.0.1 update, not saying its the update but something a miss somewhere. Will get back when I find the culprit.

Great job on the X1d update btw!

Been experimenting alot with the concrete limiter since and I think cake really need to look into redoing it, I'm finding its not very good on the low end, makes it muddy on a whole mix, Ive started starting using Tone Booster barricade, much more transparent IMHO and only 15 euros! Probably to do with the Auto saturate on Barricade, maybe cake can look into the CL and rethink it.

Try the demo and compare with Concrete limiter you'll see what I mean. Its really difficult to match commercial loudness without seriously affecting your mix with the Concrete limiter.

    Hi Rasure,

It's not quite a fair comparison.  The Concrete Limiter is a low-latency (~1.5ms) track-limiter.  The TB plug-in has almost 25 times that latency.  When it comes to full-mix integrity, look-ahead is everything.  Personally, I'd never want 1535 samples of delay on any project with live monitoring.  We didn't build a mastering limiter because we wanted a track limiter that could be used as a live-insert on many, many tracks.  Personally, for that task, I think CL is one of the best out there.  FWIW, many have expressed interest in a mastering version.  It's something we're considering.

    Cheers,
    ~Bob

I'm happy with it just the way it is. Its simple and it works. I do not think it muddies anything.

I use it on the master buss all the time now.  I do have it as the last module in PC.

FWIW, I too would be interested in some samples if you could post them.  You might be encountering an issue with the ProChannel that we've seen before.

    Thanks,

I have a couple of samples I did earlier just haven't had time to upload them yet. (Will do it ASAP)

Well I for one would be most interested in the the mastering limiter you talk of cus the CL is definitely not suitable for the master buss, where a limiter is of most use to me personally. Since using the PC2A T-Type Leveling Amplifier (which is superb), have no need to use limiters on tracks :-) Barricade is top notch for master buss.

Rasure how hard are you hitting the CL? I use it to keep a stray peak from getting through. I avoid clamping down too hard. I do want some dynamics in my work.

"Its really difficult to match commercial loudness without seriously affecting your mix with the Concrete limiter. " - I can confirm this effect (when used on a bus/master). Tracks on a bus set to similar loudness without it become unbalanced (eg. vocal right up front, guitar pushed back) the more the left slider is pulled down. Most bizarre.

The thing is in version 1.0 I didn't notice any of this, hence why I raved about how good it was, its since 1.0.1  so I'm guessing it could be to do with that.

Either way a good transparent mastering limiter is needed as part of X1.

I didn't have 1.0 long installed long enough to notice.
